Scott VanderVoort’s Figure 002 is a 48 x 36 inch contemporary abstract painting that can be installed vertically or horizontally (as shown in the accompanying images). In either orientation, Vandervoort’s rounded, organic forms press and float against the canvas edge, emphasizing his ongoing exploration of how shape gains meaning through its relationship to boundary.
A soft, warm ground of creamy neutrals sets a calm atmosphere, while strong passages of black, terracotta red, and pale yellow create a measured rhythm across the surface. The forms feel both architectural and playful—curves and blocks interlock like components in a personal visual system, balancing weight, movement, and negative space.
Both a sculptor and painter, Vandervoort builds his compositions from a self-invented visual alphabet rooted in the contrast between circle and square. His training in Industrial Design at Pratt Institute (B.A., 1998) and more than two decades teaching there inform the work’s clarity and refinement. Figure 002 stands as a confident example of his signature organic-geometric abstraction: approachable in color and scale, yet rigorous in structure.
