Scottie Wilson was an ‘Outsider’ artist known particularly for his highly detailed style. He started his career relatively late at the age of 44 and was admired and collected by the liked of Jean Dubuffet, Pablo Picasso and Andre Breton. He started painting after doodling with one of the ink pens he sold in his shop. It seemed to be a seamless process and within a couple of days he had covered the whole of the table top with little faces and designs. He never stopped after that point. He had a deep personal code of morality and characters called ‘evils’ and ‘greedies’ are juxtaposed with symbols of goodness and truth. He found it difficult to part with this work but decided it was preferable to shop keeping. He had a deep distrust for art dealers but was persuaded to have a solo exhibition with the arcade gallery in London shown at the same time with works by Picasso, De Chirico, Paul Klee and Joan. Miro. His rejection of commercialism was unabated and he continued to sell his work on the street for a minute fraction of the price the gallery owners were asking. He said of the working class customers he attracted, ‘they’re the intellect you know!’. He spent his remaining years in Kilburn, in the 1950’s he was persuaded to travel to France by the outsider art fanatic Jean Dubuffet and was met by no less than Pablo Picasso who were both fans. Both Dubuffet and Picasso fiercely squabbled over who would buy which piece. Though always complaining of poverty, after his death in 1972, a suitcase full of money was found under his bed and large sums in various bank accounts.
This particular piece is a delightful example very much in his style utilising a full and complex composition. Though the majority of the background is black, he has included yellows, reds, blues and oranges to brighten up the work.

- Mid 20th Century oil painting of a cicada by Belgian artist BaugnietLocated in Petworth, West SussexMarcel Louis Baugniet (Belgian, 1896 – 1995) Sigale de Mer (Cicada of the sea) Oil on board with scraffito Signed ‘M L BAUGNIET / 47’ (upper right) 17.3/4 x 13.1/2 in. (45 x 34.3 cm.) Marcel-Louis Baugniet was born in Liege on the 18th March 1896. Painter, theorist, furniture designer, creator of posters, costumes and stage sets, he was one of the main defenders of the notion of Pure Plastic Arts. Baugniet studied painting at the Royal Academy of Beaux-Arts in Brussels where he mixed with Paul Delvaux, René Magritte, Victor Servrancks and Pierre-Louis Flouquet. He spent some time in Paris and decided that he would become an iconoclastic and avant garde artist. He discovered abstract art with Kandinsky, Kupka, Mondrian and Delaunay and with wonder and stupeur he also learnt of the constructivist movement, which was born in Russia with Malevitch and Lissitsky. In 1922, Baugniet then 26 years old returned to Brussels and married the Russian danser Akarova for whom he designed costumes and stage sets. M-L Baugniet painted, designed and engraved some superb series of dansers and sportspersons (the « Kaloprosopies »), works entrenched with impeccable lines of constructed art. He painted with contemplation geometric compositions which mixed a grace of colours with the rigour of shapes. Baugniet wrote articles on esthetics and applicated arts in the magasine 7 Arts and edited, with the Dutch architect Van Tonderen, the manifesto of the movement that they called « Le beau, C’est l'utile » (beauty is useful) Towards the end of the 20s, he separated from Akarova and in 1927 he opened his own Home Decor shop. With regret Baugniet laid down his paint brushes and threw himself into interior design and the creation of tubular furniture, everyday objects and carpets. He remarried the Russian Olga Reich. He created a circle of ideas that included artists, writers, politicians and intellectuals of all kinds. Throughout his career, Baugniet participated in numerous international exhibitions of decorative art. In 1977 abstraction, constructivism and Marcel-Louis Baugniet were rediscovered. Decorated and lauded, Baugniet began to paint once more and co-founded the magasine Mesures with Jo Delahaut...Category

- "Hummingbirds and Honeysuckle", ink and watercolor painting on paperBy Jesse LambertLocated in New York, NY78” x 42” ink and watercolor on paper, signed on reverse by the artist, Jesse Lambert. The abstract ground of washes of green, blue, orange and rose tones over white create an active field of color. The imagery of hummingbirds and bird feeders amongst graphic representation of trees, leaves and branches are created with defined black inkwork lines. Pattern and repetition with the vertical tree trunks, are intersected with cross sections of lumber with beautiful wood grain. This large scale painting is featured in "Shelter, Scatter, Feed" a solo show of new works by Jesse Lambert. Front Room Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition of new works on paper by Jesse Lambert, titled, "Shelter, Scatter, Feed". This is Jesse Lambert’s second solo show at Front Room Gallery. In this exhibition, Lambert continues to explore themes of shelter, safety, and the passing of time. His ink and watercolor paintings on paper depict abandoned scenes in an abstracted rural space. In previous works, Lambert combined the spaces of domesticity and the natural world, with an occasional appearance of the human figure. His new work contemplates the new reality under COVID-19, and continues to evoke the universal need for shelter and protection. In these paintings Lambert imagines the world abandoned by human inhabitants, reclaimed by nature- as if the world has moved on, without us. In this series, Lambert’s familiar color washes have taken on a more natural hue. Lambert presents a grouping of medium sized paintings which explore the theme of birdhouses as a metaphor for human needs. The birdhouses are falling apart or incomplete, dysfunctional structures failing to meet their stated function. In his larger paintings, remnants of built structures of unknown use are scattered across a forested setting. Strips or planks of wood are nailed to tree trunks. A broken ladder promises ascent, but falls apart. Fragments of wood and string hint at former use, yet all vestiges of functionality have disappeared. Abandoned bird feeders swing precariously. Within the chaos of darting birds, falling leaves and flowers, and remnants of built space, a pattern almost emerges. These paintings emote a feeling of webbed interconnectedness that reveals the beauty of decayed things, and an allure of the poignancy of impermanence. In a series of smaller black and white drawings...Category
