About the Item

Seymour Franks Tempole, 1948 Signed lower right; signed, dated, titled on verso Oil on canvas 35 x 42 inches American painter and designer, Seymour Franks, was born in New York City in 1916. Seymour Franks contracted polio at the age of 16. Despite this setback, he worked for the WPA and studied at the National Academy of Design in 1937. Early in his career, Franks produced colorful modernist abstractions, later transitioning into abstract expressionism, a path followed by many New York artists of that era. Though much of his youth was spent in hospitals, Franks emerged as a successful artist and designer. He exhibited his work at prestigious venues including the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in 1944 and 1954, the Whitney Museum of American Art from 1946-48, 1950, and 1952, the Brooklyn Museum in 1949 and 1951, the Art Institute of Chicago in 1947, the Peridot Gallery from 1948, 1950-55, the University of Nebraska in 1951, and the University of Illinois in 1952.

SONGBIRDS, Original Signed Contemporary Red Abstract Expressionist Painting
Located in Boston, MA
SONGBIRDS, Original Contemporary Red Abstract Expressionist Painting 36" x 48" x 2" (HxWxD) Oil on Canvas Hand-signed by the artist. Though entirely abstract, the rich red that dominates this large-format painting, along with the general layout of its composition, bear a striking allusion to The Red Studio by Henri Matisse. It is as if artist William O'Connor has produced an abstract expressionist take on Matisse's beloved workspace in a more modern and contemporary painting, utilizing spontaneity, energy, and bold design. The bright palette is both striking and refreshing and is sure to be a focal point in any room you hang it in. Unframed. Canvas edges are painted white. Artist Commentary: Three years ago we moved to our home in Glendora. Our efforts growing flowers and maintaining gardens provides a haven for many birds and animals. It was magical. However, our two beautiful outside rescue cats thought the whole flock was for them. Needless to say, I had to stop feeding the Gold Finches. I no longer have the finches...
