About the Item
Shanthi Chandrasekar is a multimedia and multidisciplinary artist from Maryland who has also been trained in the traditional art forms of Kolam and Tanjore-style painting. While many of her works are influenced by her Indian heritage, her true inspiration comes from the mystery and majesty of the world around her; her muse lives where the scientific overlaps with the spiritual.
Artist statement
“My artistic journey is a search towards the meaning of life and its place in the cosmos. Curiosity has been my driving force, leading me to ask questions about everything around me. This has led to my constant exploration and experimentation of ideas based on scientific and philosophical enquiry. Combining scientific facts and theories with my wild imagination has been fruitful in creating artwork that questions our known reality and seeks to learn more about the unknown. My educational background in physics and psychology, along with my love for cultural and philosophical traditions serves as my muse. My working method also varies from highly planned beginnings to random mark making and unexpected path changers along the way. This combination of both planned and free flow approach leads to new possibilities and new directions, thus keeping me constantly excited about my work.
I am fascinated by cosmology, which is the study of the origin, evolution and the ultimate fate of the entire Universe. These big questions have been raised by various cultures and civilizations from time immemorial, leading to various creation theories. Through theoretical and experimental methods, science has been on the search for these ultimate truths. I have explored these theories and discoveries through geometrical abstraction, ideas from traditional arts and my own visual interpretations.”
- Shanthi Chandrasekar
Shanthi Chandrasekar has been drawing and painting since early childhood, and has been trained in the traditional art forms of Kolam and Tanjore-style painting. While many of her works are influenced by her Indian heritage, her true inspiration comes from the mystery and majesty of the world around her; her muse lives where the scientific overlaps with the spiritual. Her artistic practice combines scientific and philosophical enquiry—facts and theories—with a wild imagination and constant exploration. She is fascinated by cosmology, the study of the origin, evolution and the ultimate fate of the entire Universe, and has pursued it through art. Her striking, beautiful, and complex works question our known reality and seek to learn more about the unknown.

"I am fascinated by the theory of the multiverse, which suggests that our universe might not be the only one and might exist beyond our reach. Proving or disproving this theory is difficult for various reasons, but imagination has no such reservations. The possibility of these hypothetical universes having different geometries, constants or even laws of physics as we know inspired me to create this series of paintings." - Shanthi Chandrasekar
