About the Item

Sherry Giryotas' abstract paintings in this series are reminiscent of Paul Klee’s paintings with orange hues and geometrical shapes which almost take on the look of a landscape. Every year Giryotas takes a repose in the country, which inspires her more realistic landscapes. These landscapes are grey in tone and she makes a point to include real natural artifacts in these paintings, such as fern stems. She then paints over the stems to embed them into the painting. When looking at her body of work as a whole, one gets a sense of a migration process from place to place, which reflects her life, past and present. Giryotas has exhibited at the South Bend Museum of Art, the Milwaukee Museum of Art, numerous galleries in Chicago, IL, and the Georgian Art Museum in Tbilisi, The Republic of Georgia. She has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and has been awarded various Artist-in-Residencies and Fellowships. She has also had several exhibitions in the Dallas, Texas area, where she now resides with her sculptor husband, Philip Shore.

Michael Kessler’s work explores the continuum between gesture and geometry. Each work consists of as many as 50 micro-thin layers of translucent and transparent acrylic. Biomorphic tendrils branch to and fro, while arcs of line and color slip over and under matrices, balancing nature’s sinuous curves with the mindfulness of structure. He likens the gestural freedom in his works to a kind of painterly “tai chi” – a...
