About the Item
"Untitled (View of Provincetown Harbor)", is an oil on panel work made by Hans Hofmann circa 1937. The work is stamped verso by the estate of Hans Hofmann. The artwork size is 17 1/4 x 23 1/8 inches. The framed size is 25 1/2 x 31 1/2 x 3 inches.
Hans Hofmann is a recognizable name whose works spans Cubism, Fauvism and Abstract Expressionism. Hofmann influenced three generations of artists in Europe and in the United States, and he is known as one of the most influential art teachers of the 20th century. After emigrating to the US in 1932 and opening a school in New York, he began also running a successful summer school in Provincetown, Massachusetts between 1935 and 1958. Provincetown became an important summer center of Abstract Expressionism in the 40s and 50s, and here Hofmann taught painters such as Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and Frank Stella.
Hofmann’s signature style is an amalgamation of Cubist forms depicted in the vibrant color palettes of Fauvism. The focus in his work is what he called the “push and pull” between color, form, and space within the picture plane. "View of Provincetown Harbor" (1937), sits at a pivotal moment in art history, created in the early years of the summer school in Provincetown and right at the start of Hofmann’s influence and inclusion in Abstract Expressionism as it developed in the subsequent years. The work has Hofmann’s typically Fauvist color palette with the dock depicted in the more figurative forms of his early work.
Hofmann’s works are in the permanent collections of major museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Tate Modern, London; the Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice; and the Art Institute of Chicago.
