About the Item
"Down Comes the Sky" in "Urban Peace" collection is an original painting by San Diego Artist Shima Shanti in the ancient art form of Encaustic. Up to 50 layers of purified beeswax mixed with all-natural earth pigments and a fir-tree sap called damar resin are painted on Russian Baltic birch panel then fused with the flame of a torch. Shima's aesthetic is minimal. Combined with all-natural earth elements and earth-tone palette unexpected levels of complexity surface in this simplicity.
Beeswax is one of nature's best preservatives impervious to moisture, decay and UV light. The unique beauty of Encaustic painting is imperfection. There are bubbles, ripples and markings on the smooth-textured, high-gloss surface.

San Diego artist, Shima Shanti is an Encaustic painter working in the ancient art form of painting with beeswax and fusing with fire. She paints visions of Peace revealing what lies beyond appearance free of the confines of perception. Shima holds a special reverence for the unseen details in the complex and labor-intensive encaustic process. Her minimal aesthetic and use of earth-tone palettes neutral, deep, and rich suggest simplicity. In this simplicity, unexpected levels of complexity surface. Shima's choice of all natural earth elements; organic beeswax, earth pigments, fire-tree sap Damar, and Russian Baltic birch wood panels is a quiet whisper to the authenticity and integrity of her work. Shima's inspiration is borne from growing up in the endless abundance of water and big sky of Montana. Her connection to nature has gifted her with an innate sense of color and composition. Today in the lakeside hamlet of Del Dios near San Diego the timeless joy of lost hours in her studio and the simple pleasures of outdoor balance the business demands and travel of her artist career.
