About the Item
In this abstract composition by Montreal-based artist Shireen Kamran, colour and form create a dynamic painting. Blocks of ochre, steel blue and white colours are punctuated by black calligraphic markings. Kamran’s work—in form and colour is influenced by the paintings of fabled abstract artists such as De Kooning and Picasso. Kamran’s work also honours her Pakistani heritage and often references a form of Islamic mysticism called Sufi. One of a series.
“I am very inspired by Sufi culture, a constant thread in my work, this concept of Sufi philosophy, reading Rumi etc. I don’t paint in the traditional way–it's how I express it on canvas.” Shireen Kamran
She received a BSc. degree from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan and a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal. Her work is held in private collections in Canada and abroad. Shireen Kamran
Shireen Kamran creates lyrical and dramatic works reflecting restless mobility, a sensitivity to cultural displacement, and a memory of people and places. Her abstract layered forms may bring to mind silhouetted architecture, minarets and towers. Kamran's titles refer to shared layers and lineages of human experience. Kamran received a B.Sc. degree from the University of Peshawer and a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal.
