About the Item

Striking in colour and form, this contemporary composition is by Yvonne Lammerich. The Canadian artist has garnered an international reputation for her inspired exploration of abstracted- non-representational forms often using vibrant colours. The origami-like shapes in this piece are made of foam core and painted with gouache—a pigment mix that has been used for more than twelve centuries. The colour palette—in black, orange, deep red, blue and dark gray against a neutral background defines each shape that appears in three rows of two. In the 1970s Lammerich was already developing a unique visual language. “I resolved to work my way through a simple and fundamental question that resulted from my lived experiences of having a multicultural parental background, then moving from one continent and culture to another, and finally learning a new language at the vulnerable age of fifteen. This body of work therefore began my reflections on questions of shape and identity.” Yvonne Lammerich "Lammerich has always been interested in patterns, but patterns understood through the sieve of a colour-sensibility and syntax that conserves its freshness, its originality and its dynamism.” James Campbell, Galerie Clara Maria Sels, Düsseldorf Yvonne Lammerich was born in Germany in 1946. She emigrated with her family to Canada in 1959. Lammerich attended the Ontario College of Art and also received a master’s in art history from Concordia University in Quebec. She furthered her studies and acquired a Ph.D. from the Université du Québec à Montréal. While pursuing her own art, she also taught at York University, OCAD University, the University of Lethbridge, and Zayed University in Dubai. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally including at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art and is held in numerous private and public collections.
