About the Item
This work began as Shizico Yi’s Wild Card painting for Sky Arts, Landscape Artist of the Year 2026, painted on location in Dover with views across the English Channel toward France. The plein air day proved one of the challenging experiences, with unpleasant coastal winds and straight painting through 8 hours of burning summer sun testing the drying time of the paint, the windy condition for the canvas to hold and the environment of the TV crew around alongside with dozens of public and many other artists none stop activities, all these made the painting experience extremely challenging.
After the TV plein air recording, Shizico continued to work on the canvas for anther three months, transforming it into something deeply personal. Back in her garden, she layered the painting with her herbaceous border plants and finished the piece with gold leaf brush strokes; she is turning a public assignment into a work of deeply private meaning. The result is one of the most demanding also most precious paintings of the year.
Shizico's unique approach to paintings, erasing, rewriting, and destroying the landscape at the background through bold strokes of gold leaf on the top layers, works on the concept of bringing distraction to creation. The painting exemplifies Shizico Yi's artistic vision, which is ever-evolving and experimenting.
About Sunlit-Landscape Memory Series:
The [Sunlit Series] is Shizico's profound exploration of captivating yellow/gold leaf.
Yellow is a colour she believes has the healing power for those afflicted by grief.
The golden hues engage in a dialogue with the layers of landscape in the background. The interplay of these contrasting elements ( the textured surface of gold leaves against the oil paint of the landscape) adds another layer of fascination.
The result is a breath-taking testimony to the profound connection between the materials, the subject (the deeper meaning of the landscape and the memories), and with the artist-self.

Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
