About the Item
This special large Gold leaf on Oil canvas board created by Shizico in early autumn, where Dahlia bloomsome and the colour of turning leaves take centre stage.
The pictorial language in this series pays homage to Japanese Woodblock prints; Shizico sees Dahlias the symbol of longevity, joy and hope; for their ability to bloom from summer throughout the autumn into late chilly November, brighten up our autumn garden while every other plants fade.
This painting also challenges the genre of paintings in contemporary art. It is a testament to Shizico's creativity and her willingness to push boundaries in advancing her visual language through experiment with materials while grounded in the history of art; her work is rooted in a lineage that spans from El Greco to Hiroshige, from Matisse to Van Gogh.
Each painting is deeply personal by focusing on Shizico's every day, things and landscape around her. This approach ties her work to the seasons and the fleeting moments of time. Each painting is a one-of-a-kind, ephemeral and unrepeatable. Once completed, it captures a moment that is forever gone, making Shizico’s original artwork uniquely rare and authentically, tied to the essence of impermanence of being.
This painting is a part of her "Memory Landscape" Series where Shizico explores forms, layers, and time onto 2D paintings.
In this outstanding painting, Shizico applied layers of materials ( Gold leaf, Oil, Acrylic and Gesso ) to create lyrical narratives, capturing the play of landscape across different moments in many days. Yi has captured the scene in her garden throughout the days in one canvas, condensed 100s of hours into one moment.
Memory Landscape series invites viewers to journey through time as Yi explores how being in the moment shapes our life, growth, seasons, and ageing. Through each painting, she paints emotion with her profound passion for art and life.
With her unique, confident and expressive brushstrokes and its distinctive visual language, Shizico captures the raw essence of her artistic vision in this painting with Gold Leaf over the landscape of the season on canvas; documents and preserves the fleeting beauty of life and the sweet memories it holds, froze in time in paintings; her conceptual approach to arts made her paintings beyond mere botanical representation.
Shizico Yi paints most of her paintings in situ and from life. She began gardening in 2015 to create a healing space for her elderly, ailing dog. After her Labrador passed away, her gardens became wellspring of inspirations for her art—places of solace and healing safe-space where grief and creativity intertwine.
Like a modern-day Monet, Shizico has built her life around greenery and nature over the decade, reaping the rewards of her labour as gardens inspire her while serves as a living studio where she makes her own kind of landscapes.
