About the Item
Soklak, a painter born in 1977 in Paris, has a distinctive artistic journey marked by a bold fusion of graffiti, calligraphy, and abstraction.
In 1986, young Soklak experienced his first artistic fascination when he discovered the graffiti that adorned the corridors and subway cars of Paris. He was instantly captivated by the energy emanating from certain tags and the freedom of expression they embodied. A few years later, in 1993, Soklak took his first steps into the world of graffiti, leaving his mark on the streets of his suburb with tags, and then delving into writing and street art for several years. In 1995, Soklak naturally pursued his passion by enrolling in a graphic art school, earning his diploma in 1998.
Soklak gradually redirected his focus towards creating more elaborate murals, often found in vacant lots and industrial wastelands characteristic of the Parisian suburbs. However, in 2002, feeling the need to create on a daily basis, Soklak turned to canvas. The limited size of this new medium, though initially constraining, proved to be a springboard for new artistic explorations. Soklak abandoned the classical codes of "graffiti art" while retaining spontaneity, energy, and the freedom of expression. Inspired by great calligraphers, Soklak became passionate about the art of writing and incorporated calligraphic elements from Hebrew, Arabic, Egyptian, and Asian scripts into his work. He merged the codes of graffiti with various currents of calligraphy, creating a balance between tradition and urban modernism.
In 2015, Soklak was invited to join the Calligraffiti collective, bringing together emerging talents in contemporary calligraphy from around the world. In 2020, Soklak further explored abstraction by removing the presence of letters from his canvases, moving towards abstract expressionism and lyrical abstraction. His work took on a new dimension, reminiscent of the paintings of Georges Mathieu, punctuated by splatters, splashes, and drips. This free-flowing movement, free from constraints and traditional artistic codes, harked back to his roots in graffiti, which he continued to practice in parallel on walls.
