About the Item

Silver Birch magical forest. The painting was created mainly using a pallet knife with thick paint for texture. Part of my uplifting, vibrant, blue sky series. I enjoy creating paintings which are striking and have a magical element to them. I love the contrast of the orange and reds against the sky. Contemporary artist Sophia Chalklen is sold online and in our gallery at Wychwood Art. Sophia has always had a strong passion for Art ever since she was a child. Sophia studied at Winchester school of Art where she completed a BA specialising in Textile design. After achieving her BA she went on to become a Freelance Printed Textile designer for a small company in London. Shortly after that she managed to get a job as a Fine Jewellery Designer for the Crown Jewellers, Asprey and Garrard Bond St. Sophia became a specialist in designing high end Jewellery, accessories, and ornaments for English and Middle Eastern Royalty and the Elite. She also designed a great variety of items including rings, Jewellery Suites, watches, cufflinks, Jewel incrusted clocks, tiaras and precious ornaments. Her eye for detail leant well to her career in jewellery design and she became an expert in her field. Once she decided to start a family she went back to main her love of fine art, drawing and painting and started her own business running Art classes for all age groups. Running weekly classes teaching children aged 5-11 as well as running private group lessons for teenagers and adults. She also taught weekly, in care homes, which were really rewarding and beneficial to the mental health of the residents. Due to the Covid pandemic her classes were put on hold. During this time, she became quite sick and was unable to walk for about 6 months. She missed her walks in nature terribly and to help her mentally cope she decided to paint, and began to build up her own body of work as an Artist. Sophia's work took off and she has since become busy with regular commissions. She is inspired by nature and light and she likes to add 24ct Gold Leaf to her art which adds a touch of magic. She has now started selling a new line of uplifting, unique, nature inspired oil paintings. Like Art, nature is an amazing form of therapy and escapism. When she combined the two it made her truly happy. Sophia also enjoys painting wildlife animals and a percentage of the sales go to wildlife conservation. The best part of selling artwork for her is seeing the joy it brings to others especially when the subject holds a lot of meaning. Caterpillar Dreaming
By Yannima Tommy Watson
Located in Miami, FL
Yannima Tommy Watson is a Pitjantjatjara artist born around the 1930s, in the bush some 44km west of the small isolated community of Irrunytju. Not yet very well known to the French public, despite his participation in the architectural project of the Musée du Quai Branly, Tommy Watson is nevertheless often considered the greatest living Aboriginal artist. Like many aborigines of his generation, he lived a traditional, nomadic or semi-nomadic life before his contact with Western civilization; then he will occupy the only jobs that the Aborigines find: herdsmen (until Yuendumu), laborers for the construction of infrastructures in the desert. Throughout this period he became familiar with his "country", a harsh region, and deepened his knowledge, both profane and sacred, relating to Dreams and Dreamtimes, to the connections between sacred sites and the Ancestors. He will even work in Papunya, where the artistic movement started. But the Pijantjarra are intransigent with tradition…no question at this time of revealing the motives and the secret stories. The North of South Australia, the region where he is from, was touched by the pictorial movement only at the very beginning of the 2000s. In 2001, Tommy began his career as an artist in Irrunytju (Wingellina). He is a young artist… He learns by observing other painters and draws on the experiences of a long life and on the exceptional knowledge he has stored up. But quickly he will find his way, a radically new style where color plays a major role. Very quickly, the iconography now well known by the artists of Yuendumu, or the Western Desert, Balgo or Lajamanu disappeared. The symbols are no longer there. As Rover Thomas...
