'To The Slow Graceful Dance'. Mixed Media Painting, Botanical, conceptual

2018

About the Item

'To The Slow Graceful Dance' Original Artwork A breeze in the theatre, a dance begins, costumes rising to the rhythm of the birdsong choir. The painting captures an essence of the ephemeral and the enduring: the fragile, fleeting bloom of the graceful actors in this classic tragedy: the Dierama, the Angels Fishing Rods, wrapped in the ancient symbolism of floriography, a means of cryptological communication across cultures for thousands of years. The beautiful dance of the bells will come to their symbolic end. 'To The Slow Graceful Dance' is from an evolving body of work titled 'Elemental' in which Sophia employs her unique style of working using the four elements of nature. "It is a balancing act of control and freedom; of discipline and guidance, whilst simultaneously relinquishing all authority and throwing the odds to the winds, to chance encounters and the unexpected. The physical plein air process of creating this painting captures the tangible moment when the primary forces of sunlight and the winds of time are frozen into being: A painting scratched and scarred by the caress of stems and leaves, and silken petals, swaying rhythmically; then to be washed, bathed, reveled: tactile memories, intrinsically embedded". A mixed media painting on watercolour paper. With deep blue tones of cyanotype solution used as a painting medium, together with vibrant colours of richly layered acrylic ink and poetry inscribed in pencil. Signed in pencil to the lower right corner; Haiku inscribed in pencil to lower centre; studio label, signed and titled to verso. Float-mounted, framed & glazed (Hand finished Italian hardwood frame). Alternative framing available, please contact 71.5 x 18 cm / 28.1 x 7 inches (Framed 90 x 36.5 cm / 35.5 x 14.4 inches) About The Artist Sophia Milligan is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist, exploring discourses on permanence & evanescence; the eternal, cyclical absolutes of birth & death; motherhood & childhood; and ancient immutable connections. With resonating ripples of intuition and instinct Sophia illuminates the presence of the ordinary, creating moments of sublime present. 'Born among the wild cliffs and tempestuous seas of west Cornwall, I grew with the intimate details in the twisting lanes and the intense changing light throughout the turbulent seasons. I formed a primordial connection with a deep instinctual sense of being part of the natural narrative, and wherever in the world I may be, this connectivity underpins my practice. Like the wind sculpted hawthorns and sensual coves of weather worn granite, I have been shaped by the powerful energy entwined in this ancient raw environment.’ ‘We are the stories of the journeys that came before. I weave into my work the tales of transitory circumstance; of struggle and survival; of forms and textures holding records of evolutionary millennia. I paint, I draw: with marks, mixtures, photography, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whispered breeze. I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation. There is beauty in such poignant breaths. All moments are significant, every pebble of now forms the vast mountain of yesterday, and the great realm of tomorrow's possibilities'. Sophia has a 1st class honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Arts and World History, and a Masters Degree in Contemporary Visual Arts. Her work is held in international private collections, and exhibitions of her interactive, immersive installation, photography and mixed media works include 'Tabula Rasa', London; 'Superlative', Plymouth; 'Transition', Newlyn; The Eden Project, Cornwall; The European Parliament, Brussels; Kew Gardens, London; and 'The Cameraless Film Festival', Chicago.

    By Peter Soriano

Porch drawing 2 (Abstract Painting) Spray paint, pencil, ink, watercolor on paper. Unframed. Peter Soriano works on relatively large sheets of Japanese paper with a tendency to work from something observed, ideally around him. He tends to be “in” the configuration that is the subject of the work. Soriano is fond of “systems” objects attached to other objects, such as the wiring plan of a room. But very often there are other shapes that play a role in the work. The artist would fold and rework a piece a number of times. Folding seems to concentrate the dialogue that attracts him. Reworking is part of his nature. The finished work normally is the result of this ebb and flow between the heightening and repositioning the relationship between forms. This drawing highlights the configurations of a large porch that Soriano used as a studio in Maine during Summer 2010. Peter Soriano is a Philippines-born French-American abstract artist who divides his time between New York City and Penobscot, Maine. Although he began his career as a sculptor, his work is now two-dimensional. He is known for his bold spray-painted wall murals...
