About the Item

Oil on canvas – 120 x 40 cm (47.2 x 15.7 in) Framed size: 127 x 47 cm (50 x 18.5 in) Presented in a natural or black wood floater frame (collector’s choice) Year: 2025 – Signed lower right In The Books of Peace, French artist Sophie Dumont offers a meditative vision of knowledge, presence, and stillness. This vertical-format painting depicts a stylized bookshelf composed of three gentle tiers. The book spines are rendered as abstract forms — upright, silent, and delicately spaced, as if engaged in quiet dialogue. The palette is soft and harmonious, blending off-whites, warm beiges, pearl greys, deep blacks, and subtle touches of ochre and muted red. The oil paint is applied with a palette knife in layered, textured gestures, giving the surface both visual and tactile depth. Each “book” becomes a symbol — not of words, but of memory, rhythm, and interiority. There is no literal reading here. The viewer is invited instead to pause, to breathe, to inhabit a space of calm mental architecture. The Books of Peace is not so much a depiction of a library as it is a portrait of the quietude that books can create within us. Part of Sophie Dumont’s ongoing abstract library series, this piece stands out for its verticality, its refined minimalism, and its contemplative power. It is a poetic tribute to silence, order, and the gentle presence of knowledge.
