About the Item

Sophie Dumont's "Jeu de Matières" delivers a captivating visual experience by skillfully combining oil and collage on canvas. With dimensions of 81 x 60 cm or 31.89 x 23.62 inches, the canvas presents a balanced and meticulously crafted composition. The size framed is 88x67 cm or 34.64 x 26.37 inches The bold use of geometric shapes, particularly in shades of verdigris and black, creates an intriguing visual dynamic. The shapes overlap and intertwine in a way that arouses the viewer's curiosity, encouraging a deeper exploration. The color palette, dominated by subtle green tones and deep black accents, imparts an atmosphere that is both mysterious and sophisticated. The incorporation of collage adds tangible texture to the painting, inviting the viewer to feel the different material layers. This introduces a tactile dimension to the artwork, emphasizing the importance of touch in understanding abstract art. The overall composition appears to play with the notions of contrast and harmony. The rigid geometric shapes contrast with the organic texture of the collage, creating a visual tension that contributes to the dynamic aesthetic of the piece. Simultaneously, the overall balance maintains a visual harmony, preventing the painting from becoming overly chaotic. "Jeu de Matières" embodies the creative freedom of abstract art while demonstrating technical mastery. Sophie Dumont has succeeded in creating a work that invites contemplation while offering enough complexity to stimulate the viewer's imagination. This painting stands as a visually stimulating exploration, allowing each observer to find their own interpretation within its rich nuances and subtleties. Choose the frame black or natural wood What sets Dumont's work apart is the strategic use of collage, adding an intriguing layer of complexity to the composition. The integration of mixed media introduces a tactile quality, inviting viewers to engage not only visually but also through the sense of touch, forging a unique connection with the artwork. The choice of a library as the subject matter is both nostalgic and forward-thinking. Dumont captures the dichotomy of tradition and modernity, offering a visual dialogue between the tangible, tactile nature of books and the ephemeral, ever-evolving world of ideas. As the observer navigates the canvas, the careful observer will notice nuanced details—a worn edge, a faint imprint—all contributing to the overall narrative of intellectual exploration. Dumont's mastery lies not only in her technical proficiency but also in her ability to infuse a static image with the dynamic energy of human intellect. In conclusion, Sophie Dumont's monochromatic ode to libraries transcends the boundaries of conventional representation. Her skillful manipulation of oil and collage creates a work that invites contemplation, sparking a dialogue between the viewer and the profound significance of the library as a sanctuary for knowledge. Dumont's art not only captures a moment in time but also beckons us to delve into the timeless allure of literature and the boundless realms of human thought.

Johnnie Winona Ross Deep Creek Seeps 10, 2007 Oil paint on acrylic base burnished on Belgian linen Signed twice, dated and titled on the verso; also bears the original Stephen Haller Gallery label\ Canvas is stretched against wooden backing but no outer frame This work was originally sold by the Stephen Haller Gallery which hosted several critically acclaimed, sell-out shows of New Mexico resident Johniie Winona Ross, whose exquisite Minimalist aesthetic really took hold with collectors. The debt to famous New Mexico resident and Minimalist goddess Agnes Martin is obvious, but Winona Ross has a disctinctive style and technique of his own. The process of creating this work was laborious: Ross typically applies as many as 90-100 layers of paint to each canvas, then scrapes the surface with a straight-edged razor to reveal the many layers (and their chronology), and finally burnishing the surface with a Pueblo pottery stone to achieve a soft gloss. Maureen Mullarkey of Studio Matters wrote in 2010: THE LOVELINESS OF JOHNNIE WINONA ROSS' paintings elude translation into either reproduction or verbal description. In 2011, ArtDaily published this announcement from Stephen Haller, publicizing a later exhibition: "Washington Post critic Stephen Parks characterized Ross’s work in this way: “From a distance his canvases appear to be simple, minimal constructions of horizontal stripes with hints of vertical color in the background. Up close the paintings are seen to be extraordinarily beautiful and complex objects that induce a humming meditative state.” Ross grounds his work in the inspiration of the desert of the American Southwest, and borrows techniques from ancient Native American sources, melding them with a distinctly sophisticated and utterly contemporary vision. His use of the Native American technique of burnishing pigment and minerals with a potter’s stone to create a hard surface with a visually warm sheen creates an effect reminiscent of the softening of marble steps...
