About the Item

This artist is a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner grant awarded to artists with established abilities, established by the wife of Jackson Pollock. We love the work of this artist because his work bring color, vibrance yet harmony and balance from use of symmetry or from composition of shapes and colors. The many underlayers of colors and brushwork explore depth and emotion to each unique piece. His work draws on geometric shapes, architectural constructs, that are harmonized with each other. His pieces are either a playful, tasteful interplay of colors or quietly monochromatic. Shapes of Things 28 x54 x 2 Oil paint, cold wax and marble dust on canvas, stretched on wood frame Signed, ready to hang Framing not necessary, unless requested, because painting wraps around canvas at sides Video for viewing attached Drawing from the architectural origins of his past work, this series of abstract oil paintings contemplate geometric spaces and their relationships to each other. Using oil paint, wax medium, and marble dust on canvas, the artist creates a harmonious balance on the canvas, characterized by textured shades of colors, with linear lines and shapes - allowing a meditative composition of shapes and colors to emerge. Grants & Awards 2003 Recipient of a Grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation selected by a committee of distinguished art professionals awarded to artists with established ability. The grant was set up by Lee Krasner, wife of Jackson Pollack. 2015 Finalist at the Global Art League 2015 exhibition at the Montreal Art Centre. 48 x 104 in. / 4 x 8.6 ft (2 panels) "Chromatic Fantasy" Large Oil on Linen
By Alexis Portilla
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This is a beautiful, abstract expressionist oil painting on linen by Alexis Portilla. This piece is in 2 panels. He obtained his Masters of Fine Arts at Columbia University in 1990. His bold linear lines, use of symbols, pictographs and strong colors create atmospheric abstracts. Influenced by the emotion of artistic expression in music, poetry and literature, the artist finds bold expression in color, lines and shapes that resemble pictographs, and texture. “Using simple forms and creating swathes of rich texture, Alexis Portilla builds atmospheric abstract paintings that convey a sense of time having passed. Brushy areas of color suggest the indeterminacy of memory, while bold linear forms speak for the present.” “In some of his smaller works, Portilla experimented with beeswax. Applying a smooth coat of wax over the surface, the artist sealed in his sparse, abstract forms, while leaving whole sections empty, the images hover in the wax, as if frozen in time, yet the pieces have a fresh, almost dewy look.” - Meredith Mendelsohn, Art News magazine review. The artist has shown in group and solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally. His works have been commissioned by major corporations, universities and for private collections.
