About the Item
Mnemonic Rhythm (Bright, Multicolored Textile Inspired Abstract Wall Sculpture), made by Susan Stover in 2025
wood, oil paint, varnish, waxed linen thread
30 x 30 inches
Lightweight, excellent condition and ready to hang
The back is painted fluorescent orange is it glows against the wall
The piece hangs with several screws and 1-inch spacers across the top
This large abstract work was made by San Francisco based artist, Susan Stover, in 2025. The patchwork is composed of hand-stitched pieces of wood that are coated with colorful patches of oil paint. The backside has a neon paint surface that reflects onto the wall it is hung on. The loose ends of thread lend a folk or rustic sensibility.
Artist Statement:
My work investigates the tension between fragility and stability, control and chaos, through stitched structures that bridge the arenas of painting, textiles, and sculpture. The works are composed separate elements made of wood or cardboard and are joined together with heavy threads. I use stitching not only as a method of construction but as a conceptual framework: a way to explore how things are held together and the tenuous reliability of the structures we rely on. Whether social, political, or cultural, the systems that shape our lives are rarely as solid as they seem. The stitching is a powerful symbol of both repair and vulnerability. It is a metaphor for how we try to hold things together, the interdependence of individual elements, and the constant strain of maintaining a cohesive union. They are held together by provisional means — by people, agreements, routines, and norms — each a kind of stitch in the fabric of our collective existence.

Susan Stover
Susan Stover is an interdisciplinary artist based in Graton, California. She holds an MFA from California College of the Arts in Oakland and a BFA from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Her work explores the process of creating as well as the patterns of daily life and considers associated aspects of repetition, meditation, and ritual. Trained in textiles with an interest in cultural history, Stover utilizes traditional fiber techniques and surface design patterns to transform humble materials such as cardboard and house paint into quilt-like objects. Pieces of cardboard are cut to fit together like a puzzle and are painted and distressed. Once assembled by hand-sewing, they create playful abstract compositions that function on a micro and macro scale. Stover’s paintings are part of many private and corporate collections. She is represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY. She also teaches workshops online from her Northern California studio, in person at other locations in the U.S., and internationally.

Anne Francey has been working with subject matter inspired by nature for most of her artistic career. Since the pandemic, this focus has become ever more apparent as her new acrylic paintings on paper demonstrate her intuitive process of reinterpreting literal subjects like leaves, flowers, birds, or bugs into vibrant worlds of layered color. She begins by drawing from life but then allows fluctuating colors, traces of the hand, and evidence of the physical medium to be introduced as the composition evolves and finds its final imprint on the surface. The spontaneity of her process welcomes the unknown, she explains: “The things that moved me first…might have become by now just a faint whispering. But I know that a story is being told, even if I don’t understand yet all the words.”
About the artist:
Anne Francey was born in 1956 in Grandson, Switzerland. She attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne (ECBA) from 1976 to 1981, where she received a diploma of Fine Arts in painting. In 1981, she moved to New York where she attended the School of Visual Arts and the graduate program of Fine Arts at Hunter College. She graduated in 1987 with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA).

Scale, vibrant, jewel-like, diaphanous strips of fabric collages
By Linda Schmidt
Located in New York, NY
Linda Kamille Schmidt plays with emotional connections and memory in her smaller, framed works. In their encasements, each collage appears as a portal; a well of both excitement and sentimentality. Her transparent and opaque fabrics mingle together with an almost casual ease. Schmidt’s hand is evident in the cut, placement, and suturing of each strip. The artist vacillates between precise machine and loose, wobbly hand-sewn stitches. Her subtle use of pins in the works act as focal points for the eye as it dances around the celebration of color and texture. As a result, her works refuse the sterility of manufacturing, and challenge the reductive elision of perfectionism and femininity. This sense of touch evokes a closeness with the fabric, almost inviting contact. A hot frenzy of geometric forms, Schmidt’s fabric swatches about and overlap to form a kaleidoscopic play with depth and recession. Coupled with the scale of these smaller pieces, Schmidt draws her viewer forward, and entices them to fall into her mesmerizing displays.
Linda Kamille Schmidt is originally from Kansas where she attended Bethel College and where most of her family still lives. She received an MA and MFA in drawing and painting from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. She has lived and worked in Brooklyn, NY, since 1989.
