About the Item
Catching The Light: February Evening II by Suzanne Winn [2021]
My “Catching The Light Series” was painted during the winter of 2020/2021. During the darkest days of the pandemic, I found myself increasingly drawn to focus on the transient moments of beauty with the landscape and skies around me. These paintings are a celebration of light - nature’s gifts to us during the long, dark winter. Nature for me provides constancy in times of flux, and feelings of hope, joy and freedom. This particular painting was inspired by the most spectacular February sunset, filled with the intensely beautiful purples, pinks, organges and golds. Framed in a bespoke, hand-painted wooden frame

Suzanne Winn, artist. I am a landscape artist living in rural Hampshire, England. Central to my work is a desire to tap into the energy I feel when I am within the landscape. This energy for me brings a sense of movement and freedom, and a feeling of connection. Much of my work is based upon landscapes immediately local to my home. I like to revisit the same locations repeatedly, so I really can get to know these places intimately. A core aim for me is to convey something of how it feels to be within these spaces, and my emotional responses to experiencing nature in this way. The first stage in my artistic process is to go out and draw within the landscape, using charcoals and/or pastels. I use charcoals to create tonal studies and pastels to lay down colour. I work rapidly, focusing on key shapes, tones and colours, and trying to capture the energy and feeling of the moment. I aim to go out drawing every week, so that I can stay attuned to the landscape as it changes from season to season, and indeed from day to day and from moment to moment. Back in the studio I paint in oils from my sketches, memory, and from photographs that I have taken whilst out working and walking in the fields. I work with a limited, but very flexible colour palette. I like to work “alla prima”, adopting a wet-on-wet approach, often layering up thick, impasto layers of paint in a single painting session. My aim is to anchor my work in what I have seen and observed, but also to work instinctively and intuitively, focusing on conveying a sense of energy, atmosphere and emotion.

They seem to have grown in perfect harmony - each one making room for the other. This painting is part of a series called Look Up Trees. Emz spends time with trees daily to help her mind heal from PTSD in 2021. She has 'grown' over 140 trees in oil paint and digitally on her ipad. The mindful painting process she's established helps her to recognise and work through some difficult emotions. She's currently working on ways she can share these tools with others through a mindful sketching practice. Emily Finch, Artist, Painter is available with Wychwood Art. Emz has always been hugely inspired by the natural world, growing up on a farm in Wiltshire, South West England. At school, Emz was the art scholar and pushed the boundaries of what was possible in terms of scale and ambition for her art projects with her art teachers, making sculpture and installations which were deeply conceptual. At the age of 18, Emz became disabled overnight after a failed hip replacement and was left in a wheelchair. The decision was taken to abandon her dreams to go to art college, so she obtained a degree and went on to have a successful career in the City and then in TV, career highlights including working with David Attenborough on 7 productions. Emz found her painting again after her daughter was born in 2017. She embarked on a foundation at the London Fine Art Studios and won a scholarship to the Creative Visionary Programme in 2019. After hosting a sellout open house that same year, Emz spent the 2020 lockdown painting a series called #GreenLondon, celebrating the green spaces all around her in London. The paintings from this series were exhibited at my local David Lloyd gym at Raynes Park during COVID restrictions. Since 2020, Emz also has an active commission book selling gifts of landscapes that could not be visited during lockdown – these paintings helped people celebrate love, commemorate deaths and remember family time that was much missed. Since March 2021 Emz has been growing her forest of trees in memory of the losses, she suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic. She aims to use this work to raise awareness about mental health...Category
