About the Artist:
Regarded one of the most significant artists of the postwar Japanese avant-garde, Tadashi Sugimata (杉全 直) is considered as one of the country’s leading abstract painters of the postwar period.
Born 1914, in Tokyo, the artist grew up in Himeji, Hyogo. He studied oil painting at the Tokyo Fine Arts School.
Although Sugimata began his career creating surrealist works, the Informel movement influenced his oeuvre, creating an aesthetic shift towards abstract expressionism, which culminated in the 1960’s with the creation of masterpieces such as Space with Pocket 3, Work V, and Work P.
He exhibited his works at numerous domestic and international exhibitions, among others the Premio Lissone Internazionale per la Pittura (1959), Sao Paulo Biennale (1961), Venice Biennale (1962) and, and is a recipient of numerous awards throughout his career.
As a professor of Tama Art University and Tokyo University of the Arts, he was also a highly influential figure in the education of young artists.

The particular choice of means and technique, inspired by Senkichiro Nasaka’s mastery of both Japanese and Western painting, conveys the semblance of geological accretions, and clearly adheres to Jiro Yoshihara’s motto: “create what has never been done before”

Born in Osaka Prefecture in 1923, in 1942 Senkichiro Nasaka entered the Kyoto City Painting University. where he was a contemporary of Kazuo Shiraga.
In 1960s he made a career switch from Japanese traditional painting to Western style oil painting, creating works under the influence of the informel style.
