About the Item
'Piercing Shafts'
Original artwork, framed ready to hang

Yucca leaves: lances and swords, flashing shafts of sunlight through the piercing forms, a dance of loyalty and protection. The painting captures an essence of the ephemeral and the enduring: a fleeting moment wrapped in ancient symbolism. For thousands of years floriography, the symbolic language of plants and flowers, has been a means of cryptological communication across cultures.
'Piercing Shafts' is from an evolving body of work titled 'Elemental' in which Sophia employs her unique style of working using the four elements of nature. "It is a balancing act of control and freedom; of discipline and guidance, whilst simultaneously relinquishing all authority and throwing the odds to the winds, to chance encounters and the unexpected. The physical plein air process of creating this painting captures the tangible moment when the primary forces of sunlight and the winds of time are frozen into being: A painting scratched and scarred by the caress of stems and leaves, then to be washed, bathed, reveled: tactile memories, intrinsically embedded".

About The Artist
Sophia Milligan is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist, exploring discourses on permanence & evanescence; the eternal, cyclical absolutes of birth & death; motherhood & childhood; and ancient immutable connections. With resonating ripples of intuition and instinct Sophia illuminates the presence of the ordinary, creating moments of sublime present.
'Born among the wild cliffs and tempestuous seas of west Cornwall, I grew with the intimate details in the twisting lanes and the intense changing light throughout the turbulent seasons. I formed a primordial connection with a deep instinctual sense of being part of the natural narrative, and wherever in the world I may be, this connectivity underpins my practice. Like the wind sculpted hawthorns and sensual coves of weather worn granite, I have been shaped by the powerful energy entwined in this ancient raw environment.’
‘We are the stories of the journeys that came before. I weave into my work the tales of transitory circumstance; of struggle and survival; of forms and textures holding records of evolutionary millennia. I paint, I draw: with marks, mixtures, photography, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whispered breeze. I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation. There is beauty in such poignant breaths. All moments are significant, every pebble of now forms the vast mountain of yesterday, and the great realm of tomorrow's possibilities'.
Sophia has a 1st class honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Arts and World History, and a Masters Degree in Contemporary Visual Arts. Her work is held in international private collections, and exhibitions of her interactive, immersive installation, photography and mixed media works include 'Penwith Gallery' St. Ives; 'Tabula Rasa', London; 'Superlative', Plymouth; 'Transition', Newlyn; The Eden Project, Cornwall; The European Parliament, Brussels; Kew Gardens, London; and 'The Cameraless Film Festival', Chicago.

Underworld, Past- From the series " Past, Now, Future" by Parimah Avani - 2023
Located in Roma, IT
Underworld, Past is a drawing realized by Iranian artist and Poet Parimah Avani in 2023.
China ink, acrylic, and mixed media on Japanese Kozo paper with applied Tengujo Kashmir paper and Papyrus, Plettenberg, DE.
Exhibited in " Heroine's Journey" 2023, in Gallery hall of German Bank " Sparkasse", Winner of scholarship and art residency "Werkstatt Plettenberg" in DE, 2023.
From the series " Past, Now, Future" in which the central piece "Earth- Now" is in the Municipal collection of Plettenberg, Germany.
Hand-signed and dated.
The artwork is represented with alchemical, magical, and mythological symbols and signs, through rebellious miniature figures, creatures and animals that shape the whole body of time and three words, here the past - underworld has the shape of the head of a horse, with by metal colors referring to the alchemical process of soul in a minimalistic manner, painting is characterized by expressive brushes. In a fusion of myth and archetypal features, the works aim to transport viewers into the intricate realm of "Heroine's Journey," an exhibition that encapsulates the essence of unity, rebellion and revolutionary figures, transformation, and resistance, and the enduring power of mythological narratives.
Through a combination of limited colors, shapes, and ancient symbolism, these works invite an odyssey that transcends the boundaries of culture, time, and narrative. Drawing inspiration from Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey. Avani's works weave together a narrative that celebrates the interconnectedness of all living beings.
Avani employs a chosen palette of alchemical colors: various gold, silver, bronze, tint, and copper, representing metals and planets. Each color carries deep, symbolic significance. Gold symbolizes the golden spirit and enlightenment, while silver connects to the feminine aspect and the moon's goddess associations. Copper represents both women and the essence of love. These colors create a narrative resonating with universal themes of transformation and spirituality, mirroring the elevation of the soul through alchemical symbolism.
Parimah Avani, born in 1988 in Tehran, Iran, is a multidisciplinary artist and a recognized figure in contemporary hermetic Persian literature and the avant-garde "Other" movement. Her book, "Magic Verses of Antalus," was a finalist for the prestigious "Shamlou" Award. Her most recent achievement is winning an art competition for a scholarship from Werkstatt Plettenberg in Germany, culminating in a solo exhibition held at the Gallery of the German Bank of Sparkasse. Avani's artistic journey began with travels to China and Russia during her formative years, oriental philosophies, particularly Zen and Buddhism, and folk arts ignited her passion for comparative mythology evident in her archaic style. In 2009, she moved to Rome, Italy to study multimedia art, and gained a Master’s in painting at the Fine Art Academy of Rome. Immersed in cultural parallels between East and West, mythological themes transcend boundaries in art, exploring magic and ancient scripts inspired by the scholarly insights of Frazer and Eliade on rituals. Her anthropological view culminated in a Ph.D. in the history of...
