About the Item
Modern blue and yellow abstract expressionist painting by English artist Tony Magar. The work features bold, emotive strokes that continue across both canvases. Signed in the front lower left corner as well as signed, titled, and dated on the reverse. Currently unframed.
Artist Biography: Born in London in 1936, Tony Magar studied at the Royal Albert School of Speech and Literature. The artist traveled extensively for five years through Africa, China, and India. Magar's first artistic endeavor was as an apprentice sculptor to Mark di Suvero, but by 1978 he became focused on painting. His painting career took off when he moved to New York and began working with a group of abstract artists. Magar worked with and became friends with artists such as Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Robert Rauschenberg, and was one of the founders of Park Place, the first gallery in SoHo to show abstract art.
During the 1950s, Magar experimented with his paintings by lighting the lacquer that covered his painting collages, creating what he termed "burn" paintings. These burn paintings resulted in two fires that ravaged his studio. Eventually he moved to Denver where he taught sculpture at the University of Denver. He continued to paint and carry out commissions about the Vietnam war and the politics of the Nixon era. Magar equates "expression" in art with making a statement that results in a resonance between the painting and the viewer.

“Helping You Say Goodbye To Me” Contemporary Gestural Blue Abstract Painting
Located in Houston, TX
Contemporary blue toned gestural abstract expressionist painting by Houston based artist Kristi Haines Herman. The work features layers of swirling brushwork in tones of blue and white. Signed, titled, and dated on the reverse. Currently unframed, but options are available.
Artist Biography: As an abstract painter, Kristi Haines Herman, uses her artwork to execute ideas and two-dimensional environments that create an emotional experience for the viewer. Her paintings are inspired by personal involvements and reactions to them. Phrases and words ruminate in her mind and slowly turn into abstracted figures that convey her inner thoughts. Haines Herman is highly influenced by movement as her artistic expression due to many years in dance. Movement is depicted through various gestural lines, shapes, and texture which allow the audience to venture through the canvas; thus a visual dance from one edge to another on the painting’s surface.
Ballet was Haines Herman’s first love in the art world, starting at age five. She learned to use body movement as an outward expression which allowed her to explore various audience reactions. This would later correlate with her artwork. In her late teens, dance and visual art would intertwine with time on stage as well as painting for expression. Gradually, visual art became her primary artistic avenue.
Haines Herman attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia, where she majored in studio art under professors Frank Hobbs...

Basterra's abstract expressionist approach to painting is a response to her environment, nature, and gestural movement. A text-based practice of journaling and communing with nature provides a foundation for her empathy and biophilia.
Always researching her interests, she does not premeditate a composition. She starts working on a painting and thoughts come to her during and after the work is completed. She absorbs her environment and works from an internal subconscious.
