Gary creates tension by applying a brightly colored grid to a muted surface that is scrapped, scratched, and sanded to reveal what lies beneath.
About the Artist
Artist Gary Noland Jr. creates expressive abstracts with rich colors, splashes, and mark-making. “I create layers that are then scraped, scratched, and sanded to give a glimpse of what lies beneath the surface,†says Gary. Artistically inclined at a young age, Gary was inspired to pursue his creativity after winning a poster-making contest in the first grade. Later, he completed his Master of Fine Arts at the University of Kentucky, fully realizing his dynamic abstractions. Gary worked in quality departments of various manufacturing plants—their floors layered with paint and tape that had been scratched or worn down over many years—became a key influence of his distinctive style.
