About the Item
Inspired by his travels to Egypt, particularly his visit to the Valley of the Kings, Self Portrait #1 by Troy Smith evokes a sense of timelessness and spirituality. The artist was captivated by the stars carved into the rock ceilings of the ancient tombs, symbolic of the night sky and the journey into the afterlife. This influence is visible in the numerous stars that float in the background of the painting, representing stars and the mysteries beyond life. The bold use of colour and texture creates an expressive depiction of the artist.
Rendered in acrylic on canvas, this self-portrait is Smith's first exploration into depicting his image. The figure has an ecclesiastical calmness, whose eyes are wide open yet still, creating a serene and meditative atmosphere. Self Portrait #1 captures the artist's reflection on life, death, and his journey, making it a poignant and powerful work of abstract portraiture. Smith’s face contrasts deep black with radiant blue eyes, an intense focal point drawing the viewer into his gaze. His beard, rendered in fiery hues of orange and yellow, appears almost ablaze, complementing the overall heat and dynamism of the work. The body, outlined in vivid yellow, is filled with thick layers of orange and red, signifying warmth and raw emotion. Black splatters across the chest add a layer of abstraction and movement.
This piece captures the artist's exterior and interior essence, blending figurative and abstract elements to create a complex self-exploration, vulnerability, and power narrative. Self Portrait #1 invites the viewer to reflect on identity and the emotions that define it.
Troy Smith channels vibrant energy into an abstract interpretation of his identity.

"The most important thing any art can offer is a bridge to a deeper experience of oneself. The experience of art occurs outside of time —both its making and its effect— despite the necessary parenthesis of its historic moment. This is the framework from which my efforts proceed.”
New York City-born painter Adam Shaw’s vivid, intricate paintings which are woven with literary allusions and scientific formulae, provide an impressively accurate snapshot of the artist’s rich and diverse life experience. Galaxy: contemporary canvas painting w/ imagery of stars, sun, universe & space
By Joseph McAleer
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
"Galaxy" is an acrylic on canvas painting with textured brushwork depicting stars and space in the universe. It is signed on the back. Edges are neatly finished and painted black, so there is no need for additional framing. Every purchase comes with a free, hardcover copy of the beautiful illustrated new book, "Joseph McAleer: Sixty Years."
"Joe McAleer's paintings engage us as participants in a complex perceptual game. Comprised of contrasting patterns of color, texture, and form, which fill the canvas from edge to edge, his restless abstractions elude a fleeting encounter. Rather, they absorb our attention with rhythmic structures and visual anomalies designed to stimulate and perplex our senses. McAleer's kaleidoscopic abstractions have their basis in the humble Modernist's grid,......"
- Joe Houston, Author "Optic Nerve, Perceptual Art of the 1960s"; Curator, Hallmark Art Collection.
McAleer is an artist and lifelong educator based in NJ. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Rowan University, and has exhibited his work up and down the east coast, including major solo exhibitions at Bridgette Mayer Gallery and Locks Gallery...
