About the Item

Oil on canvas, signed upper left and dated and signed verso. Titled "Orientale" Dated 1963. A note from a potential client:: Hello - just wanted to let you know that I was looking up Philip online in seeing if any of his pieces are around. My name is Sandra Forman, I am a residential architect and interior designer, 63 years old. My parents have about 6 or 7 of his pieces and he made one for me as a gift when I was a child. I do have a full documentation of his shows in Europe somewhere which I may be able to access - not sure - as I recently sold my parent's home and all is in storage currently. I just want you to know that as my mother is Belgian - she bought her first piece from him when she married my father who is American and was studying in Brussels. He was showing in one of the finest galleries there in about 1956 and the pieces were at least this price back then - when you could rent an apt. for a month at this cost. He showed in Germany and Paris as well I believe. My mother never met him until by chance she ran into his work in a gallery in NYC (my parents moved to Westchester/outside the city) downtown somewhere and bought more work from him directly then. He lived all of his life in SOHO and lived in Westbeth - the' artist's residence with his wife Anne who was in journalism - he is survived by two children Sara and Max. I knew them all. I have spent a good portion of my career with clients who have valuable artwork - I think his work continues to be unique and powerful and unlike anything I have seen anywhere. I wish that there would be more interest and that this work would get more attention. He lived the life of a true artist - poor and passionate - he committed suicide when he was in his 40's ? I no longer recall if this was from sadness or due to a serious disease. I have been unable to reach his children but have tried - I had been to their home many times. I hope this info is of interest to you and I can look and see if I have access to the documentation but this potentially tells you more than you knew. He was definitely showing in Brussels in the 50's and you might be able to get more on artnet. There is a dealer somewhere in my area who said he cannot keep them in the shop when they show up - they sell right away - but my parents lost that info and wish I had it as my children detest them so I cannot keep all the ones I have! He was a very rapid painter and rather prolific I actually have pictures of him painting a tryptic on commission in someone's home somewhere. It was not a happy time in europe. As well, as you will never find this out anywhere - he only had one eye - the other was glass, not sure why. I hope that this was interesting to you - I still find his work amazing but it requires a sophisticated client and taste but it is certainly modern work and in my mind, in a class of its own.
