Virginia Candler says of her work…
I make paintings, collages and sculptures that explore my immediate surroundings and materiality. Often, it’s observations of the natural world that inform my mark making and themes. Created during my residency at the Joan Mitchell Center, the canvases are part of a series titled Borrowed Gesture that investigates the life/death/life cycle of banana plants in my yard. After the freeze in 2024, I watched the plants crumple, change color, and regrow from their stumps. The ongoing patterns of decay and expansion fascinate me—not only the visible transformations but also the unseen root network that sustains these rhizomes below the surface, reflecting the interconnection of all things.

Born in Atlanta, Virginia is a visual artist living and working in New Orleans, LA. Her work has been exhibited at The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Ferrara Showman Gallery, Second Story Gallery, Good Children Gallery, and is in the permanent collection of Ochsner Health Clinic and The Carrollton. She is a member of art collective Where Y’art Works, Second Story Gallery, and was a 2024 Artist in Residence at the Joan Mitchell Center. She lives with her husband, three teens, three cats and a dog.
