About the Item

This striking Mid-Century Modern abstract expressionist oil painting by Walter Blakelock Wilson (1929–2011) dates to 1962 and exemplifies the dynamic energy of the era. A vibrant symphony of jewel-toned colors—sapphire blue, emerald green, golden yellow, amber, and reddish brown—intertwines with softer tones of cream, beige, olive, and tan. Accents of orange, red, teal, gray, camel, and white add complexity and depth, creating a rich, multi-layered composition. Signed and dated “W.B. Wilson '62,” the work is presented in a custom gold leaf frame measuring 45 ½ x 37 ½ inches, with the canvas itself at 43 ¼ x 35 ¼ inches. Walter Blakelock Wilson was a New York-born painter whose lineage traces back to famed Hudson River School artist Ralph Albert Blakelock. A Colgate University graduate and Korean War U.S. Air Force pilot, Wilson gained recognition for his portraiture and large-scale murals. After settling in Colorado Springs in 1956, he led the art department at Fountain Valley School for over two decades. In 1964, he earned a Master’s degree in Art from Colorado College. Wilson’s work is held in numerous private and corporate collections, including the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, attesting to his lasting influence in American modern art.

He worked in various industries, including as a coal miner, gold miner, and machinist at Schneebeck's Industries in Colorado Springs for 20 years. During this time, Carter honed his artistic skills under the mentorship of Charles Bunnell, a painter from the Broadmoor Academy. Carter’s works reflect the boldness and emotional intensity of Abstract Expressionism, with vivid colors and strong compositions. He worked primarily out of Colorado Springs and Canon City, Colorado, and exhibited his art nationally, including shows in Texas and Illinois. After graduating, Knox went to Paris to attend the atelier of Cubist artist, André L’Hȏte. During his time in Europe Knox digested the various art movements of the moment, including Surrealism, Tachisme, Colour Field and Pop Art. Visiting the great museums, he was particularly interested in Analytic Cubism and Georges Braque’s intimation, rather than description, of object. He also went to Brussels to visit the first major show of American Abstract Expressionism in Europe. He returned to Scotland eager to establish his own style, drawing on everything he had seen in Europe. In 1960 the Glasgow Herald presented an exhibition during the Edinburgh Festival of young artists from the west of Scotland.
