Signed and dated Warren Brandt '58, this dynamic mixed-media composition by American artist Warren Brandt (1918–2002) exemplifies mid-century abstraction with a vibrant use of color, line, and gestural movement. Created in 1958, the work features pastel, gouache, and collage elements—layered with torn printed text—executed in a lyrical, non-representational idiom associated with Abstract Expressionism and the New York School. Brandt studied under Philip Guston and Max Beckmann, and later exhibited at major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum. This piece reflects his unique balance of formal structure and improvisational mark-making, achieved through an intuitive, painterly hand. Signed lower right in ink and mounted in a giltwood frame with archival matting.
