About the Item

Transcending Canvases with Bespoke Frames The function of a picture frame is to encase a painting, providing it both protection against damage and a decorative touch to enhance its presentation. For centuries, people have been matching frames to paintings based on an artwork’s particular style and characteristics. At the same time, a painting can be matched to any number of frames depending on the preferences of the beholder, so we see that paintings and frames remain separate, independently constructed entities. When people gaze upon a work of art, they care about the picture frame like they would care about a decorative box or piece of wrapping paper around a gift, or like the case on the back of their phone: there is no indispensable connection between the two entities in question, so if the receptacle around the object of interest gets taken apart or worn out, it can be replaced without a second thought. In this series, I set out to extend each image beyond its canvas, giving a new life to its frame so it transcends its original function to become an integral, inseparable part of the painting. In this way, the painting also transcends its original function and becomes a new kind of painting fused to its frame. I call these: paintings with bespoke frames.
