About the Item

Contemporary large scale abstract floral painting by Texas based artist Wood Anthony Francher. Inspired by Mexican floral embroidery patterns and textiles, the work is a burst of bold color. Currently unstretched. No stretcher bars included. Note from Artist About Work: These large-scale abstract paintings are inspired by Mexican floral embroidery patterns and textiles that I have been exposed to my entire life both in Houston, TX and in Mexico; a country whose proximity and relationship to Houston, TX is undeniably interwoven. These floral patterns speak to the deep history and rich culture my community, city and state shares with Mexico, Mexican Americans and Mexican American communities throughout the region. Although inspired by Mexico, these paintings are artistic representations of both Houston and Texas. A part of my technique involves me loosely blending the colorful patterns that I paint into each other using holy water sourced from the small chapel where I was baptized in Zacatecas, Mexico. Much of the beauty in these paintings is found in the areas where the separate colors meet, overlap, and blend. These paintings physically demonstrate the beauty of colors as they touch, mingle and overlap to create something larger and even more beautiful. In this way, these paintings are much like Houston’s cultural diversity – ever growing, ever welcoming and infinitely beautiful. It is widely known that Houston is a unique city built on incredible cultural diversity. I use and blend together many vibrant colors as a representation of the multitude of different cultures that call Houston home. In addition to being representative of Houston, these abstract floral paintings are also inspired by Texas highways in the spring. Every year, Texas highways and pastures become a kaleidoscope of colorful wildflowers. The start of springtime, when wildflowers are in full bloom is well known to people across Texas. Taking a short drive and experiencing such profound beauty at the start of spring is something many Texans look forward to. I want viewers of my abstract floral paintings to experience this same beauty. Paintings in my Kaleidoscope series are the abstract summation of my experience as a lifelong Houstonian, Texan, and Mexican American. I’ve rearranged the rainbow and I think the world is going to love it. Artist Biography: Born and raised in Texas, artist Wood Fancher Anthony is deeply inspired by the artistic richness of his mother’s homeland in Zacatecas, Mexico. Much of his work is filled with brilliant color and energy. Growing up in Houston, Wood was surrounded by his mother’s family and robust Mexican culture. His story and connection to Texas and Mexico allow him to create beautiful works inspired by his experience but fired by his imagination. He believes his art must have the ability to tell a story or provide a place for the viewer to get lost within and create their own story. Wood Fancher Anthony, a self-taught artist, can execute anything from abstract to realism and enjoys using a variety of mediums, but works primarily in oil. Wood Fancher Anthony earned his BBA in Accounting at the University of Saint Thomas in 2002 and studied drawing at the Glassell School of Art in Houston, Texas.

My artworks are a result of years of studying spiritual books written by Eckhart Tolle. Eckhart Tolle, a spiritual teacher and author, often uses flowers as a metaphor for living in the present moment, which is a central concept in his philosophy. He notes that a flower doesn't think about the past or the future; it simply exists in the present moment, fully expressing its beauty and essence. By observing and appreciating a flower, we can learn to live more fully in the present moment and experience the beauty of life around us. In Tolle's view, flowers can also remind us of the interconnectedness of all things. A flower is not separate from its environment; it relies on the sun, the soil, and other elements to grow and thrive. Similarly, we are not separate from the world around us; we are part of a larger interconnected web of life. By recognizing this interconnectedness, we can develop a greater sense of empathy and compassion for all living beings. Overall, flowers can serve as a powerful symbol and reminder of important concepts in art and spirituality. Whether we are admiring a beautiful flower in a painting or contemplating the lessons that flowers can teach us, they can help us connect with the beauty and interconnectedness of the world around us. I would like to invite you to immerse yourselves in a colorful yet calm world of impasto colors full of meditative floral magic. Style: My technique shows some influence from abstract expressionism and modern art. I use original mixed media in which undiluted acrylic paint, ink, gel medium and structure paste are applied to the canvas. I like to paint impasto abstract paintings...
