Yuri Figueroa
CHAOS III

2021

About the Item

This piece is part of an exhibition in which Yuri Figueroa explores the relation between artworks that inform each other but respond to different systems of categorizing movement and color, where conventional structure and intuitive placing of tones will determine the disruptive chaos of the surrounding artworks and vice versa. Repercussion explores Chaos Theory, which explains that within the apparent randomness of chaotic and complex systems, there are underlying patterns and interconnectedness. You cannot have chaos without order and you cannot have order without chaos. What are the repercussions of a small change in the order of things? What conditions make patterns unpredictable? This particular painting, titled "Chaos III," is an abstraction of chaotic energy. A gold foiled circle sits calmly at the center of it all. Bright multicolored swaths of paint swirl around the gold circle in all their vibrancy.

In the middle of the road
By Dana Frankfort
Located in Houston, TX
Dana Frankfort In the middle of the road, 2017 oil on canvas over panel 48 x 48 x 1.75 inches For over two decades, Dana Frankfort has explored the vexing periphery between language and sight by painting words. Rather than laying claim to the paintings, controlling their semiotic pulse, her words serve as the formal armature; they prop up, ventilate, and allow the many layers of paint to breathe. Imperatives, allusions, evocations—the words dissolve into a palimpsest of obscured serifs and stems, into color and form. The title of the work is a phrase from a poem by Carlos Drummond de Andrade’s “In the Middle of Road.” Here it is, translated from the Portuguese by Elizabeth Bishop...
