About the Item
Yvette Cohen makes art that transforms space.
Her oil paintings of geometric masses of color on shaped canvas look sculptural, but mount flat on the wall. Paintings become objects in their own right, to fluctuate between flatness and volume, bridging the divide between sculpture and painting. Often grouped in diptychs, triptychs, or more, the surrounding space is activated, so that the entire wall becomes the canvas.
Inspired by vast open landscapes. Paintings float in space. Cohen uses her tools…shape, color, line, and space to connect to the outside world.
She strive to work beyond the boundaries of the familiar to have the work evolve naturally. It’s a wabi-sabi thing. Process is visible. Brushstrokes, and underlying brushstrokes, reveal themselves. It’s not perfect. The work keeps on growing.
Approaching art as a natural evolution, Yvette is driven by the anticipation
of creating something entirely new that has never existed before.
Her paintings and drawings are flat, yet define volumes and space.
Viewers are drawn in to experience this space beyond the borders
of paper and canvas.
Yvette was born in Cairo, Egypt and raised in Paris and Montreal.
In 1976 she received a BFA from Concordia University in Montreal where
she studied with Guido Molinari. After moving to New York City she
continued her education attending classes at the Art Student’s League,
the School of Visual Arts and the Whitney seminars. For a year she
worked in lithography at the Bob Blackburn Printmaking Workshop.
In 1983 she established Plum Graphics Inc., a greeting card company,
recognized for its unique images and products. There she received several
nominations and a Louie award for her work. Louie awards are the Oscars
of the greeting card industry.
In 2004 she returned to the studio to pursue her fine art full time.
She lives and works in New York City.

Zigi Ben-Haim (born 1945 in Baghdad, Iraq) is an Iraqi-American-Israeli painter, collage artist and sculptor who lives and works in New York City and Israel.
Ben-Haim unveiled his sculpture, Treasure the Green, in SoHo on Broadway. The project was sponsored by the SoHo Broadway Initiative and the New York Department of Transportation's Art Program. The sculpture is considered to be the first sculpture to receive permission to be installed on a bus bulb on Broadway. The sculpture was made to "emphasize the importance of nature in our lives," and stands as a reminder of "the importance of reconnecting with the pure nature of the green." The sculpture uses the symbol of the leaf, which has been a major icon of Ben-Haim's work for the past 30 years. It symbolizes nature and it is a metaphoric way of emphasizing nature and the surrounding environment. He is of the first generation of Israeli artists to develop large international followings like Yaacov Agam, Menashe Kadishman and Avigdor Arikha.
Ben-Haim has received numerous grants and awards, including from Pollock-Krasner Foundation, National Endowments for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Emily Harvey Foundation Venice, Muestra Int. de Obra Grafica (Spain), and the Ministry of Culture in Israel. His works are included and exhibited in numerous public and private collections around the world, including the Guggenheim Museum in N.Y.C., the Jewish Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Israel Museum, and the Tel-Aviv Museum.
