About the Item
This intriguing colourful contemporary painting so impressively large in scale and architectural in form is by Canada’s Yvonne Lammerich. Recognized both nationally and internationally for her provocative abstract artwork, at first glance, this painting appears as a brick wall.
Rendered in a contrasting light and dark palette of blues, sienna, red and golden yellow every alternate brick is painted with metallic pigments that reflect light. This creates the illusion of movement from the viewer’s perspective.
The brickwork is arched at the top—a distinct historical, architectural reference and is broken open in the center to reveal a black space with calligraphic-like details in bright red and white. This is one of a series—two of which grace the permanent collection in the Musée du Québec.
"Each painting employs references to historical architectural arch structures and my associated colour memories.” Yvonne Lammerich
“The proximity of the work allows us to discover in each of the bricks a universe of textures and light which distances us from our initial perception. We are thus led to physically and mentally cover the distance separating us from the image. From a distance, the work appears finished, up close it confronts us with infinity.” Michel Nadeau, Chefs-D'oeuvre de la Collection, Québec, Musée du Québec
Yvonne Lammerich was born in Germany in 1946. She emigrated with her family to Canada in 1959. Lammerich attended the Ontario College of Art and received a master’s in art history from Concordia University in Quebec. She furthered her studies and acquired a Ph.D. from the Université du Québec à Montréal. While pursuing her own art, she also taught at York University, OCAD University, the University of Lethbridge, and Zayed University in Dubai. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally including at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art and is held in numerous private and public collections.
Yvonne Lammerich, AOCA, Ph.D. art history, born and raised in Germany, has lived in England, France, and Canada since the ’60s, and is a recipient of the Maria Stafford Mid-Career prize from the Canada Council. She has exhibited nationally and internationally since the 1980s, including the first Quebec Biennale, MOCCA-Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, and The Nunnery, London UK. Recent solo exhibitions include Occurrence Centre d’art contemporain and Hangar 7826/art actuel, both in Montreal. Lammerich has written extensively on art, and her own artwork has been reviewed nationally and internationally, including Parachute Magazine and Art Press. Recent projects include a public art project in Suzhou and an exhibition in Shanghai (2016) as well as participation in the Bonavista Biennale (2019). Her work is in museums, corporate and private collections. The exhibition project Voices: artists on Art, co-authored with Ian Carr-Harris, has been presented at Artport, Toronto, the SAAG, Lethbridge AB, and Zayed University UAE. The hardcover comprehensive catalogue “Voices: artists on Art” was published in the fall of 2020 and represents 51 visual artists across Canada and can be purchased at the National Gallery.

What We Need - large, bright, colourful, geometric abstract acrylic on canvas
By Milly Ristvedt
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Abstract artist Milly Ristvedt uses colour as a language to express her thoughts and emotions. When the master colourist created this painting, she was reminded of tumultuous world events including concerns around climate change. The title refers to those thoughts. Clean, vertical ‘bands’ in bright orange, yellow, lime green, and black appear to express hope. A single, narrow horizontal...

Extension - large, bright, colourful, geometric abstract acrylic on canvas
By Milly Ristvedt
Located in Bloomfield, ON
In this dynamic new work by Milly Ritsvedt, bold vertical bands of pure colour run the length of the painting. As always, Ristvedt’s choice of colours in this hard-edged piece is masterful—turquoise, deep pink, blue and bright yellow. Art Critic Barry Lord (Art in America) declared that Ristvedt’s paintings were ‘more insistent than Bush, more consciously structured than Molinari.’
“The paintings of the past two or three years explore questions of form, colour and process that arise out of earlier works.” Milly Ristvedt
Born in British Columbia, Ristvedt studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr University) and had her first solo exhibit at the Carmen Lamanna Gallery in Toronto. In the late 1960s, Ristvedt shared a studio with famed Canadian painter Jack Bush, met art critic Clement Greenberg and was inspired by American painters Jules Olitiski...
