Yvonne Lammerich
QED Gravity #2 - large, colorful, contemporary, abstract, acrylic on canvas

1989

About the Item

This intriguing colourful contemporary painting so impressively large in scale and architectural in form is by Canada’s Yvonne Lammerich. Recognized both nationally and internationally for her provocative abstract artwork, at first glance, this painting appears as a brick wall. Rendered in a contrasting light and dark palette of blues, sienna, red and golden yellow every alternate brick is painted with metallic pigments that reflect light. This creates the illusion of movement from the viewer’s perspective. The brickwork is arched at the top—a distinct historical, architectural reference and is broken open in the center to reveal a black space with calligraphic-like details in bright red and white. This is one of a series—two of which grace the permanent collection in the Musée du Québec. "Each painting employs references to historical architectural arch structures and my associated colour memories.” Yvonne Lammerich “The proximity of the work allows us to discover in each of the bricks a universe of textures and light which distances us from our initial perception. We are thus led to physically and mentally cover the distance separating us from the image. From a distance, the work appears finished, up close it confronts us with infinity.” Michel Nadeau, Chefs-D'oeuvre de la Collection, Québec, Musée du Québec Yvonne Lammerich was born in Germany in 1946. She emigrated with her family to Canada in 1959. Lammerich attended the Ontario College of Art and received a master’s in art history from Concordia University in Quebec. She furthered her studies and acquired a Ph.D. from the Université du Québec à Montréal. While pursuing her own art, she also taught at York University, OCAD University, the University of Lethbridge, and Zayed University in Dubai. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally including at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art and is held in numerous private and public collections.

  • Proposition (Set of Four) - large, colourful, abstract, acrylic on canvas
    By Milly Ristvedt
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
Milly Ristvedt is making a bold proposition in this dramatic series of four large paintings designed to be displayed together. Each of the four canvases offers a stunning visual dialogue in blocks of colour—reds, purples, orange, greens, blues, black and white for contrast. Ristvedt is known as a master colourist who uses colour to express thought and emotion. Art Critic Barry Lord (Art in America) declared that Ristvedt’s paintings were ‘more insistent than Bush, more consciously structured than Molinari.’ “They are meant to be ‘read’ together in the same viewing space. The conversations between them are intense.” Milly Ristvedt Born in British Columbia, Ristvedt studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr University) and had her first solo exhibit at the Carmen Lamanna Gallery in Toronto. In the late 1960s, Ristvedt shared a studio with famed Canadian painter Jack Bush, met art critic Clement Greenberg and was inspired by American painters Jules Olitiski...

Originally from Virginia and having traveled and lived extensively worldwide she now resides as a full-time artist and ceramist in Los Angeles. With a degree in psychology and training in ceramics, painting was a natural transition and expansion to her repertoire from an early age. With color and form as her guide, her artwork flows from spontaneous and spiritual inspiration. Influenced by her travels with the play of color and light, her paintings reflect nature, spirit and a place of tranquility. There’s a touch of magic, secrets and a touch of the unknown in every painting, when painting ”time stops and almost an altered state of consciousness overtakes as the painting evolves”. Nina’s artwork has been shown in California, New York, Berlin, Montreal, Texas and Tokyo Japan. Santa Ana...
