About the Item
This series of contemporary black acrylic and pencil on paper was created by Yvonne Lammerich. The masterful Canadian artist has spent decades exploring the nature of the human condition in wholly unique and creative ways. This bold graphic series in black on white uses a modified grid pattern—its fluid patterns are designed to express an emotional response to the idea of time and space. In each square, thick gestural brushstrokes of acrylic paint add texture and visual interest.

Yvonne Lammerich was born in Germany in 1946. She emigrated with her family to Canada in 1959. Lammerich attended the Ontario College of Art and also received a master’s in art history from Concordia University in Quebec. She furthered her studies and acquired a PhD from the Université du Québec à Montréal. While pursuing her own art, she also taught at York University, OCAD University, the University of Lethbridge, and Zayed University in Dubai. Her work has been exhibited in Canada including at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art and is held in numerous private and public collections.

Yvonne Lammerich, AOCA, Ph.D. art history, born and raised in Germany, has lived in England, France, and Canada since the ’60s, and is a recipient of the Maria Stafford Mid-Career prize from the Canada Council. She has exhibited nationally and internationally since the 1980s, including the first Quebec Biennale, MOCCA-Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, and The Nunnery, London UK. Recent solo exhibitions include Occurrence Centre d’art contemporain and Hangar 7826/art actuel, both in Montreal. Lammerich has written extensively on art, and her own artwork has been reviewed nationally and internationally, including Parachute Magazine and Art Press. Recent projects include a public art project in Suzhou and an exhibition in Shanghai (2016) as well as participation in the Bonavista Biennale (2019). Her work is in museums, corporate and private collections. The exhibition project Voices: artists on Art, co-authored with Ian Carr-Harris, has been presented at Artport, Toronto, the SAAG, Lethbridge AB, and Zayed University UAE. The hardcover comprehensive catalogue “Voices: artists on Art” was published in the fall of 2020 and represents 51 visual artists across Canada and can be purchased at the National Gallery.

Artist Statement:
“As an artist, I find endless possibilities overwhelming and use self-imposed boundaries to focus my work. This often includes some combination of: a literal grid or graphite border, employment of barbecue skewers or wooden chopsticks in lieu of paintbrushes for mark making, use of a monochromatic or limited color palette, and a reliance on shape and pattern to tell a story. Limiting the elements at play adds a measure of gravity to each decision, and every detail about the paper, the viscosity of the paint, micro variations in hues, and even the sharpness of the point on a skewer matters.
I’ve found that the more restrictions I put in place when I paint, the freer my work has become, allowing a tension to form between the organic and prescribed. Rather than sketch before starting a new piece, I spend time with the paper and begin to visualize possibilities. From there, I can expand the work incrementally. Whether I’m working in an adapted form of pointillism, playing with opacity and hue, or building patterns through repeating shape, the work evolves in its own time. It is an intentionally open process of discovery that seeks to uncover the greatest potential of the basest elements we have at our disposal”. - Kate Snow
