About the Item

A most popular drawing master, Lesourd-Beauregard exhibited extensively at the Paris Salons, and was awarded a medal in 1842. He is famous for his in depth botanical studies done in oil. This work is not signed by him but was sold originally from a French Estate at auction with several other works by him and has been identified as by his hand. The frame is a Stanford White design frame. He was a student of Gerard van Spaendonck, a renowned fruit and flower painter in France of the early 19th century. In 1840 Lesourd-Beauregard became Professor of Botanical Drawing at the Musée d’Histoire Naturelle, replacing well-known artist and teacher, Pierre-Joseph Redouté. Les Eglantines reveals the strong influence of Gerard van Spaendonk. As one of the few flower painters proficient in oil during this period, Lesourd-Beauregard’s analytical approach to this painting and his superb eye for refined detail produced a lovely and exacting study. Les Eglantines was originally part of a large French estate, from which two other Lesourd-Beauregard paintings were recently sold at auction. The Sotheby’s sale, entitled “Revolution in Art” (January 2002) included two Lesourd-Beauregard oils of similar size, which sold for $16,800 and $21,450 respectively.

French Abstract Contemporary , Mount Fuji
By Georges Noel
Located in Greenwich, CT
This Mount Fuji inspired work is what Noel called a Palimpseste. Meaning like an ancient piece of papyrus paper, man would use the paper over and over again, making his markings. There is sand on the canvas and he worked on this wet to incise in and build up the surface so there is beautiful texture. It is elegantly framed in a gold leaf float frame - 24 karat gold. Noel is an avant grade artist that worked alongside Cy Twombly in his early years at Fachetti Galleries in Paris - both artists used writing/.graffiti to form their compositions. Beginning in the late 1950s through 2000, Georges Noël produced both canvases and works on hand-made papers inspired by palimpsests, 6th century manuscript pages...
