104.1 x 102.9 cm
Signed, titled, dated (verso)

Alexandra Grant’s ongoing series, Antigone 3000, began in 2014. Taking inspiration from Sophocles’ classic Athenian tragedy, she features Antigone’s quote, “I was born to love, not to hate,” rendered through the lens of Grant’s prolific use of text, both echoing and questioning the innate decency of humanity. Riddled with concentric dots, striped beams, and cascading drips, this full-bodied canvas hums with rhythm and movement. Inky pools of pigment appear portal-esque, superseding instances of cosmically speckled foreground. Washes of color give way to arabesques of graphic line. Instances of text simultaneously pop and recede with the hero’s words reverberating throughout. The sheer force and feeling of Grant’s compositions act as a sounding board, demanding attention to the contemporary urgency of Antigone’s mantra.
Alexandra Grant (b. 1973 in Fairview Park, OH) lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

James Siena is celebrated for his inimitable process of creating intricate abstractions, driven by a practice of self-imposed rules termed visual algorithms. The artist preemptively determines his marks and actions and repeats them procedurally as his works result in intensely concentrated, vibrantly colored, freehand compositions. His oeuvre often references diagrams, complex puzzles, labyrinths, and mapping, resulting in inward meditations that actively engage traditions of pattern and mark-making in an ongoing exploration of scale, materiality, and interaction of color. Maneuvering across a diverse range of mediums, including painting, sculpture, drawing, lithography, etching and woodcuts, his work has placed him firmly within the canon of contemporary American art...
