About

“Our First Harvest in Paris” by Alexandra Rozenman is a surreal and playful horizontal 48 x 24 x 2 inch oil painting on canvas in blue, green, yellow ochre and white. Two beautiful spaces are united into one powerful image. On the left of the painting is a bluish night landscape with a big family of geese running either from something or towards something – we can’t be sure? On the opposite side of the canvas, creating the border is a cozy and welcoming interior of an empty house with wooden floor, green antique walls and a window with an iron balcony and a view of Paris, the City of Love. On the bottom of the right side, close to us there is a couple digging into an imagined garden or maybe gathering the harvest. A soccer ball rests next to the man’s leg. Do people plant flowers in soccer fields? In Paris you never know. The beauty of understanding each other, of building up a new life in a new land, gardening, home, migration all come together in this powerful narrative painting connecting past with future and love with hard work. "Our First Harvest in Paris" is initialed on the front and signed, titled and dated on the reverse. Two inch sides are painted a neutral gray-purple. As in many other paintings by Rozenman this piece has a second layer. The composition as well as subject recall a famous painting by a French XIX century painter Gustave Caillebotte, "Raboteurs de parquets", 1875 ("Floor Cleaners"). Alexandra Rozenman immigrated to America from the Soviet Union in 1989. Russian, European and American myths of national destiny and private identity take on a utopian dimension as she absorbs and expresses the psychology of otherness as fundamental aspects of her own identity. She wants her art to be like a well-worn military wool blanket that gives you warmth, love, and history. The artist states: “whatever degree of abstraction defines my thinking and visual self-identification it has all to do with the search for my own image in a great existential sea of sweeping change”.
