About the Item
This is a fun and rich work with incredible paint application, of a busy summer's day at the Beach. Andre Cottavoz is collected and loved for his expressive and incredibly think paint use! This painting is of deep dark blues and does need to be in a light filled area and have a picture light on it. It is a desirable subject and hard to find on the Post Impressionist front - subject matter like this. However, our image makes it a tad more "brilliant" in color so placement in a home is important as it needs the best light it can have to show properly.
Cottavoz has a great bio, good auction history and gallery representation! The frame is hand done and modern with 22 Karat leafing.
The canvas size within the frame is 18.25 x 24 so we have listed its total dimensions.

André Cottavoz
Born in 1922 in Saint-Marcellin near the town of Grenoble in France, André Cottavoz was passionate about painting from an early age. Encouraged by his mother, an artist herself, Cottavoz entered the Fine Arts School in Lyon at the age of 18. Despite having been pressed into service during WWII, Cottavoz continued to paint and draw through the early 1940s. After the end of War he, along with Pierre Coquet a fellow student from Lyon, co-founded a group of painters who called themselves Noisme, or Sanzisme (without ism), also known as the Lyon School of New Figuration. Comprised of artists under the age of 30, their sole purpose was to paint “in the light” with no particular defining or restricting technique, rejecting all current artistic trends. In 1953 Cottavoz was awarded the Fénénon Prize by the University of Paris. Such a commendation served to boost his reputation. A close friendship of Japanese art dealer Kiyoshi Tamenaga, whom he met in 1957, opened doors to Japan for Cottavoz hosting exhibitions of his work at his gallery in Tokyo. He died in 2012.

Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in the Parés Hall.
His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents, in the years 1930-33.
Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years.
Grau Sala lived and absorbed all the avant-garde movements that broke through in Paris, but never adhered to any. Creating your personal style. His pictorial lyricism and naturalism superimposed the evotative and sensitive quality of the image to any other concern. In 1953 Grau Sala spends his first summer in Honfleur becoming one of the most active Honflerian painters. Honfleur forms a coast triangle next to Deauville and Trouville, and in that August of 53, Grau Sala pinto is an elegant beach, which at that time met French and European high society.
His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum, Tossa de Mar...
