Adorable 19th century cat painting "Le Chat" painted by Alexandre Clarys This mesmerising cat gazes intently at the viewer, whilst the artist has captured his fluffy fur and sparkling eyes in full splendour. The breed might be a Ragamuffin or a Maine coon. Alexandre Clarys, born in 1857, was a Belgian painter, pastellist, designer and poster artist, specialising in genre and animal paintings, most notably in the representation of cats, horses and dogs. He was a student of E. Blanc-Garin at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. He was much in demand for his captivating portrayals of animals, he was commissioned to create numerous posters for horse races and collaborated with various sports newspapers. His works can be found, amongst others, in the Museums of Antwerp, Ixelles, Liège and Ostend.
