19th century English countryside landscape "Summer in the Highlands" This peaceful painting depicts an Highlands countryside scenery during a sunny summerday. In the foreground two friends can be seen chatting on the grass, whilst behind them a third friend is fishing, perhaps hoping to catch some delicacies for an al-fresco dinner amongst the friends. The sunset is colouring the beautiful highland landscape with a warm golden hue, emphasising the peaceful and joyful atmosphere. Richard William Halfnight was a painter of the Victorian era, he was born in Sunderland in 1855 and studied at Newcastle School of Art under William Cozens Way. He moved to London where he studied Art under Yeend King for three years. He exhibited widely throughout his career showing works at the Royal Academy, The Suffolk Street, Gallery, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and various London and Provincial Galleries. The oil on canvas measures ca. 60 by 90 cms and with the frame ca. 90 by 120 cms. Signed and dated lower right (the year is difficult to read, possible 1878). Provenance: Private Collection
