About the Item

Claude Wiesbuch (1927-2014) Ecuyère signed 'Weisbuch' (lower right) Oil on canvas Canvas size - 18 x 21 1/2 in Framed size - 21 x 24 1/2 in Provenance The Collection of Charlie Watts. Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare. Claude Weisbuch (1927–2014) was a French painter and printmaker celebrated for his dynamic, expressive style, which brought a remarkable sense of movement and emotion to his subjects. While he is widely known for his theatrical portraits, musicians, and equestrian figures, Weisbuch also created a compelling body of work centered on animals—particularly horses, bulls, and other powerful creatures—capturing their raw energy with bold, sweeping brushstrokes. In his animal paintings, Weisbuch fused classical draughtsmanship with a distinctly modern sensibility. Rather than focusing on static realism, he emphasized vitality, motion, and tension—often using a limited palette and dramatic contrasts to heighten the sense of life within the canvas. His horses, for example, are not just anatomically precise but almost seem to surge from the frame, reflecting both their physical strength and emotional intensity. Weisbuch’s animal studies echo his broader fascination with movement and form, aligning him with the traditions of both expressionism and baroque dynamism. Today, these works are valued not only for their technical mastery but also for their ability to evoke the primal spirit of the animals he so vividly portrayed.
