George Armfield
Antique Victorian 19thC English Spaniel dogs chasing ducks by a river landscape

circa 1860

About the Item

Wonderful classic scene of Spaniel dogs chasing ducks by a river landscape by one of England's best-loved animal painters. George Armfield was a mid-Victorian painter of mostly dog scenes but also painted other animal subjects such as interiors with huntsmen and simple well-painted landscapes. He got his big break when Queen Victoria saw some of his work and commissioned him to paint a piece for her. His work was collected throughout the world and held in many important collections. This piece is in excellent condition and if framed in a wonderful antique frame. The Spaniel paintings by Armfield were possibly his most popular subjects and he painted many outstanding examples such as this one. This is a good example of his work and would have been painted during the middle of his carrier. Later in his life, his work became less sharp and he used a darker palette. I love his outdoor scenes. they are much rarer than his interior paintings and I'm sure much harder to paint well. The movement of the dogs gives this piece a wonderful feel of the dogs chasing the Ducks and make the piece very nice. This is a perfect painting for almost any room in a home, like a bedroom, study, den, family room, hallway, dining room The complementary colors for this piece are Beige, Brown, Green, Blue, Tope, off white, black, red, gray, white. This type and quality of painting would have been painted for the wealthy British patrons for either their country houses or their grand townhouses in areas in London like Mayfair, Belgravia and Chelsea, and Kennsington.
