Large 19th Century portrait of a Terrier at a rabbit hole, oil on canvas by George Armfield. Excellent quality and condition example of the artists work rarely seen at this size. Presented in a good gilt frame. Signed and dated.

Born 1808; died 1893.
Painter. Genre scenes, hunting scenes, animals, dogs.
George Armfield submitted his work for exhibition at various London galleries between 1840 and 1875, including the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Suffolk Street Gallery. These are the only two dates shown in catalogues and, as a result, there is some confusion as to his birth and death dates. It should be noted that the signature 'Landseer' was appended by dealers to a large number of paintings by Armfield. Typical examples of his work include Three Against a Fox; Country Life and Forever (engraved by Tomkins); First Lesson (engraved by Bateman); and Experience (engraved by T. Lucas).

George Armfield
George Armfield was a British genre artist specializing in oil paintings of domesticated dogs. Armfeld professed a great love of animals, and his commissions of hounds and horses were in high demand in his lifetime. Preferring to paint hunting dogs over any other popular subject matter, Armfield’s broad, lively brush strokes captured the earthy colors of fur and grasses. Born George Armfield Smith in Wales in 1808, he was the son of portrait painter William Armfield Hobday, from whom he learned his craft. The precocious artist began his career at the young age of 16, when he exhibited his first painting at the Royal Academy: It was of Lion, a beloved Newfoundland dog. Today, Armfield’s work is included in the collections of the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and the Glasgow Art Gallery in Glasgow, among many others. Armfield died in Clapham, England in August of 1893.
