About the Item

Wright's works often depicted scenes of hunting, coaching, and rural life, reflecting the traditions and leisure activities of the British upper class. His attention to detail and ability to convey the dynamics between horse and rider made his paintings highly regarded among collectors of sporting art. This painting exemplifies Wright's mastery in capturing the elegance and movement of horses, as well as the social settings of the early 20th century. This particular painting, with its depiction of a gentleman on horseback holding another horse while awaiting a carriage, showcases Wright's skill in portraying the interplay between human figures and equine subjects within a narrative context. The distant carriage adds a sense of anticipation and movement, characteristic of Wright's ability to infuse his works with a dynamic quality. Gilbert Scott Wright (1880–1958), also known as Gilbert S. Wright, was an English painter celebrated for his depictions of sporting and coaching scenes, particularly those featuring horses. Born in Headingley, near Leeds, he was the youngest of seven children in a family where five siblings pursued careers in art. Despite lacking formal training, Gilbert was influenced by his older brother, George Wright, a noted painter of hunting and coaching scenes. The two collaborated on various projects until around 1925, often creating works for calendars and other commercial purposes. Gilbert's artistic repertoire included hunting, racing, and polo scenes, but he was especially renowned for his coaching scenes, which often featured figures in period costume. His works were used by the Princess Royal for her Christmas cards during the 1930s, and he exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1930. Additionally, he contributed illustrations to publications such as The Graphic, The Illustrated London News, and The Bystander. Wright's paintings have been featured in various auctions, with notable sales including Over the Hedge, which fetched £11,254 at Christie's London in 2006. His legacy endures through his contributions to British sporting art and his family's artistic heritage.
