About the Item

"Little Bear" is a captivating mid-century oil painting by American artist Harold Vincent Skene (1883–1978). This traditional Western landscape, painted in the 1950s, features a striking scene of a brown or black bear crossing a fallen log over a stream, set against a vivid backdrop of lake reflections, evergreen trees, and majestic rocky mountains. The golden glow of sunlight bathes the peaks, while a serene blue sky stretches above—evoking the raw beauty of the American West. Executed in oil on board, the palette includes rich tones of golden yellow, earthy brown, forest green, sky blue, and soft white, lending depth and warmth to the scene. The painting is housed in a custom gold-toned frame that complements its natural color scheme. Outer frame dimensions: 29 ½" H x 35 ½" W x ¾" D Visible image size: 24 ¼" H x 30" W Skene was celebrated for his evocative depictions of the Tetons, Yellowstone National Park, and the Colorado Rockies. His deep connection to the American landscape is evident in this work, which combines architectural precision with painterly emotion. About the Artist – Harold Vincent Skene (1883–1978) Born in Massachusetts, Skene graduated from the Harvard School of Architecture in 1906. After moving to Colorado, he studied at the Denver Art Academy and the Broadmoor Art Academy, and later worked as an assistant to renowned muralist Allen Tupper True.
