Heywood HARDY A wonderful example of Heywood Hardy's draughtsmanship showing a terrier chasing a rabbit through a forest. Picture Size: 28 x 36" (71 x 91cm) Outside Frame Size: 36 x 44" (91 x 112cm) Oil on Canvas He was born in Chester on 25 November 1842 and died in 1933 He was an animal, sporting and genre painter, etcher and church decorator, the youngest son of James Hardy Senior. His father (1801-1879), was a respected landscape painter. His older brother, James Hardy II (1832-1889), was a sensitive painter of horses and dogs, often in English and Scottish Highland hunting scenes. After an initial trial as an artist he joined the 7th Somerset Volunteers. He later studied in Paris and Antwerp and painted the altar-piece for the Hasler Royal Navy Hospital Chapel. Heywood Hardy studied art at the Beaux Arts in Paris from 1864, and upon his return to England in 1868, found his services as an artist were in great demand. He was frequently commissioned to paint portraits, sporting scenes, and animal studies. After he had returned from Paris and Antwerp he settled in London where he shared a studio with Briton Riviere, an animal artist, and his career really took off. He became a member of the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers and Engravers in 1880 the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1883 the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1891 and an Associate of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1895 He was elected to the Royal Society of Painters and Etchers, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, The Royal Society of Portrait Painters, and he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institute, and the Grosvenor and New Galleries. Although considered mainly a painter of hunting and sporting scenes, Hardy's talents were much broader than that, and many of his paintings are genre (paintings that depict scenes or events from everyday life). When compared to other British artists of his day (the late Victorian era), Hardy's style appears closer to the Impressionists. This, perhaps, is not surprising, since he studied in Paris during the height of the Impressionist Movement and is bound to have been influenced by them, though he doesn't completely abandon the British School.
