  • Sheep, South Downs, last day of June II, Animal Painting, Countryside Art
    Located in Deddington, GB
Sheep, South Downs, last day of June II is an original landscape painting by Anna Pinkster. It was inspired by time spent sketching and roaming on the South Downs in East Sussex. I loved seeing the sea glistening in the background. Throughout my career my work has been inspired by my environment - the people, places and cultures that surround me. Following graduation from West Surrey College of Art in 1994 with a first class degree, I traveled extensively in India, South East Asia and Africa creating figurative work which endeavoured to capture people immersed in their daily lives, offering an insight into the essence of a different culture. Commuters in London and bathers on the beaches of Dorset have also inspired my work but, during the national Covid lockdown, I became fascinated by my local landscape in Somerset. I have since visited Wales and the South Downs, creating work in oils and charcoal, working directly from life then refining ideas in the studio. I am most excited working intuitively, directly from life, whether it be a life model in the studio, a flock of sheep in a field or, my most recent obsession, birds in my garden - I find an intense energy and freedom which, I hope, is evident in my work. I have exhibited regularly in London at the Mall galleries SWA, RP, NEAC and Pastel Society, and in the South West, winning prizes including the Prince of Wales Drawing...

  • Ant Battle Oil Sketch by Eugen Kask, Oil on Panel, Signed, 1978
    Located in Stockholm, SE
The painting in question captures the dynamic energy of a moment seemingly frozen in time—an oil sketch by Eugen Kask featuring two ants engaged in an intense wrestling match. Kask’s approach to this piece is fluid and spontaneous, with broad, swift strokes that lend an air of immediacy to the scene. Much of the canvas remains untouched, its raw state highlighting the areas where Kask chose to concentrate his efforts, thus drawing the viewer's gaze directly to the central action of the ants. This decision to leave the background undefined gives the work a sense of incompleteness, a characteristic that is often celebrated in studies and sketches for its authenticity and connection to the artist's initial spark of inspiration. Eugen Kask, born on January 18, 1918, in Kiev and passed away on May 11, 1998, in Vimmerby, was an Estonian-Swedish painter of diverse talents. A descendant of an architectural lineage, with his father Kristjan Kask and his own background in architecture and fine arts, Kask brought a structural eye to his compositions. His life, marked by the upheaval of wartime displacement, led him to Sweden where his contributions to art continued to flourish through exhibitions and group showcases. His work spans a variety of subjects from pastoral landscapes to intimate animal studies...
