About the Item

James Pawley (1850-1879) Lord Hardinge's Arabian stallion 'Meanee', in a desert landscape signed and dated 'Pawley. pinxit/ 1849' (lower right) Oil on canvas Canvas size 17 x 21 in Framed size 19 1/2 x 24 in Provenance with Arthur Ackermann & Sons Ltd., London; The Collection of Charlie Watts. Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare. James Pawley was a British equestrian artist active during the 19th century, known for his finely detailed portrayals of horses and sporting life. Working in the tradition of English sporting art, Pawley captured the elegance, strength, and spirit of horses with both technical precision and a deep appreciation for his subjects. His paintings often featured hunting scenes, racehorses, and country pursuits, appealing to the tastes of the Victorian gentry who commissioned such works to celebrate their steeds and stables. Though not as widely known today as some of his contemporaries, Pawley's work exemplifies the genre’s emphasis on anatomical accuracy and movement, frequently set against the backdrop of lush English landscapes. His ability to convey both the physicality and personality of individual animals earned him a respectable following in his time. James Pawley’s paintings remain a testament to the enduring appeal of equestrian art and continue to be appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts of traditional British sporting scenes.
