About the Item

Scottish/British artist John Gifford (19th century to 1900) is best known for his hunting dogs, pack Ponies, setters and spaniels in the Scottish countryside and highlands. Sought after for his sporting artwork, Gifford’s work appears in art collections in the UK and US. This painting was imported from the UK. ‘The Keeper’s Pony and Hunting Dogs’, oil on canvas painting dates to the mid to late 19th century, with an autumn background of woodland and distant golden field in soft tones. The warm autumn tones of the season are reflected in the sorrel pony, and hunting dogs. This painting is presented in a wooden frame and is signed in the lower right hand corner. The painting measures 42” by 34” in the frame with a good-sized canvas sight of 36” by 28”. There is some light craquelure. The painting was reframed previously and is presented in good stable condition. Some scattered inpainting and a couple light scratches, top right canvas edge is just under the frame, but the work is sound and well presented. This is a delightful painting, by a renowned animal and landscape artist in Scotland, and is adaptable to traditional, farmhouse, rustic and broadly transitional styles. Enjoy!
