About the Item

I am delighted to offer this huge acrylic oil painting on canvas of wild horses in a rural landscape beautifully executed in the style of similar works by the famous equine artist George Stubbs (1724-1806). George Stubbs was born to a wealthy Liverpool tanner in 1724 and assisted his father in leatherwork in his childhood. Stubbs learned how to paint copies as an apprentice of local artist Hamlet Winstanley, but he basically taught himself how to create original paintings. He was also interested in anatomy from a young age and would go on to combine this interest with his talent for portraiture. Stubbs traveled widely in his life, visiting Rome at the age of thirty and later spending time in Ceuta, Morocco. Many of his clients were horse sportsmen, but Stubbs himself did not actively participate in sports. However, he did exercise by regularly walking great distances. Stubbs had a common-law wife, Mary Spencer, and a son, George, who worked as an engraver and printmaker. Stubbs used thin oil paint, so few of his works remain undamaged today. Although a full member of the Royal Academy, Stubbs did not receive his diploma on account of his refusal to submit a diploma picture. Stubbs reportedly drank only water for the last four decades of his life. The painting is of good quality featuring a very popular subject matter which will appeal to a wide audience and is extremely well painted by a very compétant English artist who has signed in the l lower right bottom corner as P.English. FRAME:- The antique gilt and plaster swept frame is a good example dating from around the mid 20th Century and is in excellent condition and really makes the painting look stunning. DATELINE This painting in our opinion dates somewhere upwards possibly from the 1950's- 1960's latest based on the frame design and is thought to be at least 60 years of age as a minimum.
